Spreading quilty joy one stitch at a time!

The Splendid Sampler – Block 16

June 8, 2016 by Shannon 8 Comments

I discovered The Splendid Sampler through my awesome Instagram community.  Haven’t
heard of the Splendid Sampler?
Well it’s a fun quilt adventure being
hosted by Pat Sloan & June Davidson in which 100 blocks will be shared throughout the year.  Two blocks are released
each week and are free for download the first year, after which they will be
converted into a book for sale.
You can follow along
as the patterns are released, or take it at your own pace.  I’m fitting them in where I can.  Mainly when I need a quick break from a
current work in progress J

There are lots of different quilters from all over the world
contributing a quilting block.  I thought
it would be fun to participate to learn new techniques and challenge
myself.  Not to mention, I really love
our community and figured it would be a fun way to meet other quilters from all
over the world all expressing their love for this art.
Although things got started earlier this year, it was
recommended to just jump in and work back to the previously released blocks at
a later date. So that’s what I’ve been doing.
Jumping in and making blocks when I can!
I’ve shared a few blocks on Instagram already, but here is the
first block I tackled of the series called Pieces of Friendship designed by Lindsay Mayland.
I had just added some new Kona solids to my stash that I was just dying to dip into.
So my colourway for this project is shaping up to be mixture of pinky, dusty rose, mauve and burgundy hues, including:
Kona Petal
Kona Woodrose
Kona Cerise
Kona Burgundy

I have been meaning to give snowballing blocks a go, so I
was thrilled to see this block implementing that technique.  It really isn’t difficult.  If you’ve tackled half-square triangles, then
you can surely accomplish this.

I was initially concerned that the fabric requirements
seemed quite generous as you can see from my scraps. But I’ve kept them in a bowl and
“shop” the bowl when making other blocks.
Some of these tiny squares were found there J
A quick heads up.  The
finished size is 6” x 6”, so with a seam allowance each block needs to measure
6.5” x 6.5”.  Don’t do like me and trim
your first block down to 6” square!

You can link up your blocks here and also see everyone
else that is participating and their take on the block.  Happy sewing 🙂

xo

Fantastic, and a wonderful idea to make the sampler blocks in between projects or when you need a break. How do you decide to participate or not participate in the many QAL or samplers or what have you?

That is such a great question, Amanda!! This is the first sampler I'm trying out and what drew me to it was the idea of challenging myself, trying new techniques and pushing my boundaries. There are some blocks that I would never have thought to try out (e.g. the ones with lots of embroidery details), but it's fun to step outside my comfort zone and try something new! How about you? What draws you to a sampler?

You should definitely give it a go, Amista!! I just love learning new quilting techniques, plus it's fun to put your own spin on the design 🙂

I love your little block! This sounds like an interesting project, but I'm afraid I really don't have the patience for tiny blocks… All those little pieces! But I'm looking forward to seeing more of yours! 🙂

I love this block and actually made one similar, but with HSTs (for my lemon pillow cover a while back). I've been really wanting to try out a sampler challenge – I just might have to jump in! 😉

How much thought have you given to your thread? Is it something you consider to be an integral part of your sewing or an after thought, something to just make do with? I ask because, for the longest time, I didn’t give the stringy stuff much thought. In fact, I was usually on the hunt for whatever was easiest and cheapest until that all changed.
