Have you seen the call out? Your help is needed.
When I heard the news about the attack
on the mosques in New Zealand, it immediately conjured memories of the attack
on the mosque in Quebec City and the call the action organized by the Montreal
Modern Quilt Guild not
so long ago.

It
breaks my heart that another call to action is needed, but it’s amazing how quickly
word spreads in our community and how many people jump into action to help out.

Before anything was officially set-up,
several of my quilty friends were already reaching out and asking if anyone knew
what the plan was to help. It just goes to show you how much love and affection
there is in this world.

WHO IS ORGANIZING THE CALL TO ACTION & THEIR GOAL
Angel of Gumboots has been kind enough to organize this block drive.
Their goal is to make at least 100 quilts: 50 of them to be donated to the families who lost loved ones, 50 to those injured and they’re hoping to collect extra blocks to make quilts for the emergency response teams who were on the scene that day.
This is a huge undertaking for the team coordinating this drive.

HEART BLOCK SPECIFICATIONS
My
understanding is you can piece whatever style of heart block you want, provided
it is 6 1/2″ (unfinished) and sticks to a green colourway against a white
background.

They
initially asked us to specifically refrain from using the colour red, prints
with any animals or prints with any kind of people/ faces/ figures on them. However,
they’ve since updated the request to allow for all colours and they will ensure
appropriately coloured quilts are donated to the right recipients.

On
their Facebook post, they included modified instructions for this
cute heart block, originally designed by Allison from Cluck Cluck Sew.

This
is such a fun and quick block to whip up too! In less than an afternoon, I had
these 5 blocks pieced up.
I
stuck with the originally requested green hearts and can just imagine how
lovely the final quilts will look with all different shades of green and
different styles of heart blocks.

WHERE TO SEND YOUR BLOCKS
There
are already blocks being sent in from all over the world from caring quilters
who want to show that the world is still full of love and compassion.

I
recall how much work it was for my guild to organize, collect, make and donate
all those quilts. It’s quite the undertaking. If you would like to help support
this call to action, you can find all the information here:

For my
fellow @mtlmqg members, blocks will be collected at the April 9th meeting.
Otherwise, there are 3 places you can mail your blocks to:
- 32/21
Graham Collins Drive, Windsor Park, Auckland 0632, New Zealand - 101
Cambridge Avenue, Ashhurst 4810, Manawatu-Wanganui, New Zealand - PO Box 19,
Kaiapoi, 7644

It
would be wonderful if you could spread the word using #heartsforchristchurch to
help the team reach their goal.
