It’s time for Christmas in July with the seventh block of the 2024 Little Forest BOM! This month you’ll be getting festive with the Striped Pine quilt block.
This month will feel like a piecing breeze after the amazing work you did with the Poplar quilt block. I challenged you to level up your piecing curves game by diving in and working with oval curves, and you rose to the quilty challenge – bravo!
So far in this modern skill builder, you’ve been leveling up your quilting skills by exploring new piecing approaches. Just look at all the techniques you’ve covered already:
- The importance of tracking your progress through the Little Forest BOM Journal.
- Small piecing in the Bonsai Quilt Block, which will set the foundation of your quilting skills.
- How to stitch and flip (aka snowballing) in the Stacked Pine Quilt Block, which is an introduction to piecing on the bias!
- How to achieve nice crisp points with Foundation Paper Piecing and how to piece curves in the Cherry Tree block.
- How to layer motifs with needle turn appliqué in the Little Forest block.
- Small piecing and FPP without as much wiggle room in the Lodgepole block.
- How to piece oval curves in the Poplar block.
This month should be a quick and fun one for you, especially with the quilting technique you’ll be using. Read on to find out which one 😉

Story Behind the Striped Pine Quilt Block
If you’ve been around here for a little bit or attended one of my lectures, workshops, or trunk shows, then you know I love a good stripe.
I don’t know what it is about that classic design, but it gets me. Every. Single. Time.
This probably explains why I found a way to incorporate them in quilt block format – ha!
I’ve mentioned before that we’ve got a plethora of pine trees here in Quebec and while many look the same, there is enough variety to keep the landscape interesting. This is why I wanted to also challenge myself to design different tree options to represent tree diversity.
From a quilting perspective, I thought it would be fun to incorporate the stripes for some fabric play! You could have fun stitching up a bunch of these and featuring different stripes in each of your pine tree blocks for an adorable modern quilt option!

Quilting Techniques Featured
The Striped Pine block incorporates strip piecing for nice quick work of your stripes.
To help you with the angles, I’ve included a template to make cutting your canopies easy peasy.
Be sure to reference the diagram in the Little Forest BOM Quilt pattern so you see where to place your template to keep those stripes on the right angle.

Top Tips
When piecing your strips together, alternate the direction in which you piece them together.
Why would you want to do that?!
It helps prevent the center of your strip sets from bowing. Give it a try and see what impact that has!

Caution
Things can get wonky real quick when adding your piece D to the sides of your canopy.
Pinning your sides in place can help keep things from shifting and stretching out on you.
