Spreading quilty joy one stitch at a time!

Tool Tuesday: Rotary Blade Sharpener

I love my rotary blades! I can’t even begin to imagine
tackling quilting without one (mad respect for quilters who attempt any quilting project
with hand cutting!).

But one thing that was driving me crazy was how wasteful I
seemed to be with my rotary blades. It’s amazing how quickly they become dull
and, with the number of projects I tackle, I was going through them at an
alarming rate. Given my disdain for waste and goal to reduce my waste
footprint, I was super thrilled to stumble upon the TrueSharp Electric Blade Sharpener!

This nifty little gizmo allows me to sharpen my rotary
blades – any size from 28 mm to 60 mm – with the press of a button. Plus it works with most brands, including Fiskars and Olfa. How cool is
that?!

The kit comes with everything you need to get started, including:

  • The electric blade sharpener
  • Sharpening stones – top and bottom
  • Oil
  • Tweezers
  • Power cord
  • Cleaning cloth

It’s a recent gift I received for my birthday, so I haven’t
tested it out for very long, but I wanted to share the good news with you as
soon as possible!

The other day, I whipped out my stash of dull blades and
went to town. I needed to prep the sharpening stones with some of the oil
provided in the kit. Then, after two 30 second whirls, they were done and
cutting through fabric like it was butter! They honestly felt as good as new.

I’m
not sure how many sharpenings I will be able to get out of them before I must
truly ditch the rotary blade and pull a new one out, but I’m sold on this
little tool. Even if I get a few extra wears out of each blade, that’s a huge
cost savings; blades are not cheap!

So, if you’re in the market for a new quilting tool (and let’s
face it, us quilters are always on the hunt for great tools!) this one is super
practical and cost effective to add to your arsenal.
Happy quilting my friends!

I have always wondered about blade sharpeners. I feel like my rotary blades dull way too fast and I use them that way for far too long. I'll have to look into this one. Thanks for the review!

Thank you so much for the review. I might have to look into that because you're right – blade aren't cheap so I end up using them far too long.

I purchased this sharpener at the Houston Quilt Show 2016 and have been TOTALLY UNDERWHELMED by it. It didn't work at all, even after talking to customer service and making the required adjustments. I hate to say I wasted money on this, but…

This gets some pretty bad reviews on amazon. Sometimes makes blades duller. Requires just the right amount, but not too much pressure to hold shut–could be solved probably if they made it with a locking device. Not too sure about this one. Love the idea, but the product sounds questionable. Wonder if layers of aluminum foil would do just as well.
