Double Chevron Lumbar Pillow – Fantasy Collection & Essex Linen

I seem to be on a pillow kick these days! Especially with this adorable Double Chevron Pillow in Fantasy!

Well, and also on a get stuff done and off my WIP list kick – ha! 

Last week I shared the floor cushion I made featuring canvas and denim and this week I’m finally getting around to sharing this pillow which has been finished (and gifted) for quite a while now! 

I used to make pillows all the time, that is until designing and making quilts stole my heart. But getting to mix in quilting with the pillow design, now that’s getting me fired up again. 

Plus, can you ever have too many pillows kicking around?

My hubz would say “yes” to that, but I just keep on making ‘em – ha! 

I love how they add a nice pop of something something without breaking the bank. And making your own means you can choose which fabrics you feature and what quilty details (or not) you want to add. 

I’ve mentioned before that my mum has a thing for pillows, some might even say obsession – she’s got quite a few at this point! And yet, I couldn’t resist making her another one as (1) I know she loves them, and (2) I knew she would love the prints I featured from Sally Kelly London’s Fantasy collection. 

I was so right on both fronts – evidenced by my mum reaching out to me after seeing the prints on my Instagram feed to say that she LOVED the blue paisley print. 

Clearly, I know my mum’s taste 😉 

So, even though I had made her a table runner featuring this collection, I just had to sneak this pretty pillow in too! 

Encouraged by her interest in the prints, I forged ahead with my original plan to make the backing different than the front. I came up with this strip design when I was making my Spotlight Cushion. I love the look so much, I thought it made for a fun alternative to the dynamic Double Chevron design on the front. This design is a little bit more streamlined and simpler, but I find it so striking. It worked out perfectly that I already planned on featuring the blue print on the back! Kismet! 

Having a different backing does mean that you need to finish off your pillow with a *zipper. It’s a little bit of extra work, but not that much and I walk you through the steps on how to attach a zipper in the Double Chevron pattern. This extra step means that you have a fully reversible pillow. Plus, since I like to make my pillow covers a smidge smaller than the pillow form so they’re nicely stuffed, I find the zipper closure keeps things more contained and you get a better pouf factor – and I’m all about the pouf factor 😉 

To ensure a nice long life for the cushion, I always line my pillows when quilting to make sure they’re machine washable. Life happens. It’s nice to plan ahead and make our lives easier for when life happens! 

When it came time to quilting her up, I was momentarily hesitant on which thread colour to feature. I wanted a colour that would coordinate, but still be noticeable without standing out too much. You know – noticeable, but not in yo’ face noticeable – it’s a fine line 😉 This gorgeous *blue steel gray in 50wt was the perfect option! She pairs beautifully with the *light blue linen, yet has enough contrast that you still see the stitching design.

•  *Light blue linen Muslin – for lining (*this would be a great substitute) 
• *Batting (scraps from larger quilt projects work perfectly here) 
• *50wt white thread – piecing 
• *50wt blue steel gray thread – quilting
