Upgrading my sticky note!

For years now, I’ve had a sticky note stuck to my desk with my handwritten notes of what fractions are in decimals. Depending on what quilt math I’m working on, I tend to switch between fractions and decimals. It just seems to be the way my brain works!

With the kick-off of the Little Forest BOM with the Bonsai quilt block, I received a note inquiring about whether the quilt pattern includes centimeter measurements.

Since all Shannon Fraser Designs quilt patterns include imperial measurements, I thought creating a quick conversion chart would be helpful to you if you’re used to working with the metric system.

Yes, I’m based in Canada and I still work with imperial measurements!

Even though I’m based in Canada where we use the metric system, ever since I started quilting, I’ve switched to using the imperial system.

Why?

Well, most quilting notions are sold in imperial units.

There’re even quite a few fabric shops that sell their fabric by the yard instead of by the meter.

This can get confusing really fast!

So, if you find yourself having to switch between yards and meters, then this Quilting Measurements Conversion Chart will be super handy for you to print out and hang on your sewing room wall.

Tip – pop it near your cutting mat so that you can easily refer to it as you’re working on cutting your Little Forest BOM pieces.

Anatomy of a Quilting Ruler

Most of the blocks of the Little Forest Quilt Pattern include measurements that are not your standard ¼”. Most of the blocks include those odd measurements, such as 3/8” or 7/8”. Knowing how to find those measurements on your ruler will go a long way in helping you cut your block pieces accurately. And we both know that correctly cut quilt block pieces is the first step to quilty success!

Here’s a visual of where to find those 1/8”, 3/8”, 5/8”, and 7/8” on your ruler.

I'm showing you how to read those different lines on your quilting rulers in the Anatomy of a Quilting Ruler! There's also a free cheat sheet to converting typical inch measurements to centimeters. See more on the blog #tutorial #quilttutorial #freedownload

Caution

Every ruler manufacturer captures their lines differently. So, be sure to take the time to look at your specific ruler to ensure you know what those lines are registering 😊.

I have rulers from a few different brands, which keeps me on my toes to make sure I double-check how those lines are represented.

A tip that was once shared with me was to use rulers by the same manufacturer. I’ve heard this helps keep measurements consistent from ruler to ruler.
