Fabric Shopping Resources – Top 50+ Fabric Stores for Quilters

January 19, 2018 by Shannon 15 Comments

50+ Fabric Shops for modern quilters | Shannon Fraser Designs | #fabric #shopping #quilting

This one is for all my quilters and sewers who have reached out to ask me where to score fabric.

When I started sewing in 2011, I knew nothing about fabric.

I thought what I found at my big box fabric store was it. And then when I started quilting in 2015 my eyes were opened, and I was introduced to the beautiful world of quilting cotton. Names like Kona Cotton, Cotton + Steel, Camelot Fabrics, Art Gallery Fabrics, RJR Fabrics; the wonderful list goes on and I was spell bound. Connecting with quilters and perusing Instagram allowed me to educate myself on the gorgeous collections beckoning me to create with them.

The challenge was finding said fabric.

Every time I went on the hunt for some textile goodies, I was always disappointed by the selection I found. Even if I found a fabric line I was looking for, often times they didn’t carry the entire collection. Gah!

Only through hours of scouring the internet and chatting with quilty friends have I started to find the prettiness I so wanted to play with.
I’ve been working on a How to Quilt Series for you and you can’t really get far without a key component – fabric!
AGF Bundle Up Geometrical | 50+ Fabric Shops for modern quilters | Shannon Fraser Designs | #fabric #shopping #quilting
Since shopping for fabric can be a little daunting. Or, if you live in Montreal, it can be very daunting.
There are so many lines of fabric that are not available in any of the local fabrics shops. And we have several, just not ones that carry the type of quilting cotton I gravitate towards. And, more often then not, most quilt shops don’t carry the full range so you’re still forced to purchase from multiple places to get the fabrics needed for a project.
If you live in the US, then count your lucky quilty stars that you live in the mecca of quilter’s heaven.

For the rest of us poor souls, here’s a list of mainly online fabric stores to help you get your fabric fix.

NOTE – This list was last updated on May 28, 2019

Canadian Based

_______________________________________________________

Bibs & Boots Apparel & Fabric – located in Dinsmore, Saskatchewan – if you’re on the hunt for childrens’ prints this is a great option. Modern with a touch of whimsy!
Birdie & Dot Fabrics – located in Edmonton, Alberta – carries some seriouslygorgeous modern prints from Alison Glass, Heather Ross, Giucy Giuce and Tula
Pink.

Clinton Modern Creative – located in Saskatchewan, Canada – they carry a good selection of Cotton +
Steel, Art Gallery Fabrics, Moda, etc.

Club Tissus – located in Montreal, Canada – a large fabric store with a few locations inand around Montreal. They have a great selection of Kona Cotton and I’ve scored
some amazing Art Gallery and Camelot Fabrics finds there. If you plan to goregularly, sign up for their membership program.

Craft de Ville – located in Montreal, Canada – Stacy offers some of the best customer service out there and I just love supporting a small business that is customer focused. Plus, she’s just a sweetheart. She alsorecently opened a retail location.

Dailylike Canada – located in Toronto, Canada – they cater to both sewers and quilters, so they have a good mix of fabrics to choose from – including some organic cottons and linens.

Dinkydoo – located in Meadows, BC – has a large selection to choose from. Plus, they carry bolts of batting! I was just disappointed with their lack of response from their customer service team when I reached out with a question. But, so many of you have reached out to say great things about Dinkydoo, so I plan on trying again!

Effiloché – local fabric store in Montreal, Canada. It’s quaint, but not conveniently located (at least for me), has limited opening hours and tends to be expensive. They carry some beautiful prints!

Eweknit – located in Toronto, Canada – I think of them as my go-to for Tana Lawn and Liberty bundles here in Canada, but they have more than that and cater to all sorts of craft enthusiasts (sewing, knitting, felting, etc.).

Fabric Crush – located in Richmond, Ontario – a small shop that carries Adorn It, Art Gallery Fabrics, Dashwood Studios, Riley Blake, etc. and also offers lots of classes.

My Fabric Spot – this was one of my faves and they sadly closed in 2017. That was a crushing day when I got the news. This was one of the first Canadian online purchases I made and the Dear Stella fabrics I picked up were featured in my very first quilt – memories!

Fabric Spark – located in Toronto, Canada – Daryl has a great selection that keeps growing and she ships pretty quickly too! This is one of my go-to places 😉

Flare Fabrics – located in Maberly, Ontario –has SO much to offer! I found lots of Japanese brands, including Kokka, Lecien, Sevenberry of Japan and even some STOF of
Denmark!

Friday’s Off – located in Toronto, Canada – has a great selection of designer fabrics, including: Andover, Amy Butler, Dashwood Studio, Lecien, Lizzy House, Simple Simon and Tula Pink to name a few. These can be tough to find in Canada, so hop over and check it out!

Island Sewing – located in Cambell River, BC – this cute shop has quite a bit to offer for both the modern and traditional quilter.

Mad About Patchwork – located near Ottawa, Canada – I’ve raved about MAP before and they are still one of my fave shops. They have a great selection of Kona Cotton and Essex Linen. And Pam’s customer service is top notch!

Modern Bee – located in Virgil, Ontario – this is one shop I’d really love to pop in and visit. Sadly, as of 2019, they’re only online. That’s ok, when they’ve got lots of fun designer prints, such as Tilda, Liberty of London and Lotta Jansdotter to pick up!
Needle Crafts + Studio – located in Beausejour, Manitoba – this is a shop after my own colourful heart! And they even carry FIGO!
Oh Look, Fabric! – located in Milton, Ontario – Modern shop that also offers workshops. Carries some really fun prints from Andover, Camelot Fabrics and FreeSpirit – to name a few.
Patch Halifax – located in Halifax, Nova Scotia – every time I visited their site (and will most definitely be visiting next time I’m in Halifax) they had me drooling over their Nani Iro collection.
Pins and Needles Fabrics – located in Victoria, BC – they have some super cute fabrics (Birch Organic Fabrics, Liberty, Ruby Star Society) and some adorable sewing patterns (Colette, Oliver + S, Tilly and the Buttons) to choose from.
Purple Katz Quilting – located in Rimbey, Alberta – has all the current modern designer prints you see on Instagram: Alison Glass, Giucy Giuce, Jennifer Sampou, Libs Elliot, Tula Pink – need I say more?

Seam Allowance Fabrics – located in Lake Country, BC – I’m always tempted by the gorgeous fabric bundles Olivia
posts on Instagram. If you’re not already following along,
you’re missing out on lots of textile inspiration!

Sew Sisters Quilt Shop – located in Toronto, Canada – they’ve got a wide selection of Kaffe Fasset fabrics along a wide selection of Kona Cotton, plus lots of pre-cuts to choose from.

Simplifi Fabrics – located in Irokoi, Canada – their focus is organic fabrics – knits, wovens and fleece – you name it, they’ve got it!

Stacked Fabric Company –
located in SK, Canada – they curate they cutest fabric bundles. I love following their account on Instagram, it’s always full of inspiration.

Stitch and Bobbin – located in  North Vancouver, BC – I love when an online shop makes it easy for me to find everything I need. Lots of ways to shop, but I particularly liked shopping by designer collection. I even found my quilty friend Tamara Kate’s latest collection!
Studio 39 Fabrics – located in Lethbridge, Alberta – they have an incredible selection of Kona Cotton that I just adore perusing! Plus, they ship nice and fast!
Tangled Blossoms Design  – located in Bridgetown, NS – if you love Tula, then this is YOUR place to be!

the pretties!

Connecting Threads – located in Columbus, Ohio – they carry their own brand of quilting cotton solids. They have a great selection of colours that I would love to check out soon!

Cottoneer – located in California – Andrea has a way with styling that makes me want ALL of her fabric bundles. Lots of goodies to check out here.

Etsy – located in Brooklyn, NY – I have bought fabric on Etsy many a time with great success. I also like knowing I’m supporting a small business.

Ev Quilts & Co. – located in USA – I love how personal
this shop is! Lots of modern prints to choose from, plus quilts to buy too!

http://www.tkqlhce.com/click-8810407-12688268

Fabric.com –  located in Kennesaw, GA –  they have a huge selection of fabrics to choose from. Interior décor, fashion and quilting cottons are just a few of the categories to choose from. I know so many people who have had great success with their orders, but I’ve had some cutting issues with them in the past. So, they’re not at the top of my list, but, dang it, they have a good selection! I should give them another go as I have heard really good things from other makers. Soon, no doubt 😉

Fabric Bubb – located in Seattle, WA – they carry an amazing line-up of fabric designers: Bonnie Christine, Me + You, Sara Lawson, etc.

Hawthorne Threads – located in upstate Read Hook, NY – they have an amazing selection of designer fabrics, plus they design their own private label collections. I have had a great experience with them and love their selection of fabric. Plus, I didn’t get dinged with custom charges – bonus!

Organic Fabric Company – located in San Diego, CA – if organic fabrics are your jam, then you’ll want to check-out the huge selection they have.

Pink Castle Fabrics – located in Ann Arbor, MI – not only do they carry all the modern fabrics you love, but they also host Glamp Stitchalot, which I would just love to attend. Still dreaming 😉

Purl Soho – located in NYC, NY – Purl Soho is one of the first US places I ever purchased from when I first started sourcing fabric. They had beautiful bundles that I just wasn’t finding anywhere else. I was in heaven! Their linens are also another of my favourites. Plus, they have some of the cutest notions out there. Check ‘em out!

Smith’s General Store – located in Maine, USA – is run by the lovely Dash who is also an amazing quilt pattern designer. From fabric, to notions and lots of other home goodies, this shop is sure to please!

Spoonflower – located in Durham, NC – this is a great resource to find indie fabric designers or try your own hand a pattern design 😉

Stash Fabrics – located in Cumming, GA – every time I load their site I just want to buy ALL the fabric! They carry the entire Kona Cotton collection, they have all the
designers I love and they have a nifty design wall too. What more can you ask
for?!

Westwood Acres – located in Santa Rosa, CA – if fat quarter bundles are your jam, then you’ll want to check Westwood Acres out. Amanda curates some of the most unique bundles out there. And they have a Liberty club that I’m seriously tempted to join. They also have yardage, in case you were wondering 😉 Too many designers to list and new ones added every time I visit. Definitely worth a visit.

Small Businesses

I know some of you run your own small business, in which case you may want to consider buying wholesale. There are a couple of providers here in Canada that you might want to look into, including:
JN Harper – based in Montreal is also a family owned business that started off in men’s suiting, but have since expanded to include women’s apparel and quilting fabrics. They’re opening order is $1,500 and you must be a retailer or wholesaler to qualify. If you’re interested, you can apply here.
N. Jefferson Ltd. – they’re based in Vancouver and are a family owned wholesale supplier of knitting, sewing, quilting and crafting supplies. They have a minimum order requirement of $300 with an annual minimum spend of $1,200 (pre-tax and pre-shipping) to maintain an account.
If you need a larger quantity of fabrics and supplies, this is a great option!
_______________________________________________________

This is by no means an exhaustive list.

These are the shops I’ve either personally purchased from, had recommended to me, or spend time perusing their beautiful selection with the intention of buying one day.Keep track of all these fabric shops with the free list!

I would love to hear where your favourite shop to buy fabric is (whether listed above or not). We can all use another quilting cotton resource in our tool box, right?!

Happy fabric shopping!

Thank you for these suggestions, Laura! I tried ordering from Dinkydoo, but I never heard back from them. Sounds like you've had good experiences with them though. I haven't heard of the other two and will be sure to check them out! Thanks again!

I've ordered from fabric.com a few times and NEVER again… every order I've had from them has been cut poorly (in some cases shorting me as much as 12 inches of fabric!) and their customer service has been horrible. I've given them multiple chances and they've disappointed me every time.

I find a lot of things I like from Missouri Star Quilt Company, especially Kona cottons. I've not been happy with the quality of fabrics from Connecting Threads, though for the price I've made a lot of charity quilts. Etsy is a lot of individual sellers, as I understand it, and I've had great success using it recently to find some hard-to-find fabrics from Art Gellery.

I love on-line shop Flip Flop Fabric Shop for the UK. The owner is a lovely lady and although smaller, she stocks a selection from the best brands, AGF, Cotton and Steel, Robert Kaufman, Kona and Dashwood and has the best customer service. Likewise Olive and Flo, similar suppliers but different selection of fabrics and great customer service again. I buy mainly from these 2.
