PATTERN FEATURES
The Winter Star quilt was the first pattern I ever released back in 2016. It’s been a humbling and empowering process to revisit her – lol! My quilt pattern designs have come a long way since then and it’s been fun bringing her up to par with the pattern features you’ve come to expect from me.
Features such as:
- Full cutting diagrams so you can see how best to cut your fabric to maximize your yardage.
- Pressing instructions at each step of the quilt piecing journey so your seams nest and points line up.
- Block labels to help you stay organized as you piece your Winter Star quilt top.
- Cutting instructions that include how many widths of fabric (WOF) strips you need to cut and then sub-cut, so you cut efficiently.
- Track your progress check boxes so you know exactly where you left off.
- Detailed step-by-step graphics so you see how your block should look at each step.
- Active hyperlinks to additional tutorials to give you added quilty support!
- Colouring page with swatch area so you can plan your own colourway.
Plus, there’s a brand-new Queen size bringing the instructions up to 4 quilt sizes, including Baby, Throw, Double and Queen for all your bed covering needs!
There’re also new instructions for an entirely fat quarter-friendly piecing journey!
Not to mention, there’re 8 new colourways to inspire your own fabric pull. Gotta love quilty options!

FAT QUARTER FRIENDLY VERSION
Have you got a fat quarter bundle sitting in your fabric stash?
I bet you do!
And that’s where the new FQ friendly Winter Star version comes into play! She’s perfect for helping you feature your favourite FQ bundle. I know how tough it can be to untie the pretty bow keeping that FQ all bundle together, but it’s going to be even better when you see them come to life in your new Winter Star quilt!
You can opt to go entirely fat quarter based including your background or mix your favourite FQ bundle with some yardage for a more coordinated look.
The fun is playing around to see what effect each has. This is where the included colouring page will come in handy to see which combination you love the most!
To get you inspired, I pulled out some super colourful fat quarters from my stash and decided to play with this Celeste bundle by Sally Kelly Fabrics. It features moons, stars and hearts, and it instantly reminds me of Lucky Charms cereal! Did you eat this as a kid growing up? My mum was very health conscious and didn’t buy us sugary cereals. I only got to indulge in them when I was visiting friends 😉. Funnily enough, my hubz is a huge cereal eater (the sweeter the better 😉) and so Lucky Charms have made their way into our home on occasion! For some reason, it makes me think of early winter Saturday mornings where we ate cereal in front of the TV while watching cartoons. Did you do this too?
While the prints might not be Christmas specific, I wanted to show you how much fun there is to be had with playing with a fat quarter bundle.
8-COLOURWAY VERSION
If you love a more coordinated and planned out look then you’re going to love playing with the new 8-colourway Winter Star quilt option.
This one came about because Pips (my cat) stole my hubs’ original Christmas quilt. It was this Holiday Irish Vortex quilt and Pips just adores snoozing on it whenever we’re up at the cottage. This ‘theft’ happened several years back and my hubs finally asked me a few weeks back for one of his own!
I wanted this new quilt in the house to have Christmas vibes but one that wasn’t overtly Christmas themed. I also wanted it to feel fresh and modern.
Enter these lovely Pure Solids that have a modern holiday feel without it being too literal.
I also was heavily inspired by this Tree print* – isn’t it cute? You know my love for trees and this one is perfect with the bright pops of colour and hint of metallic.
It’s this version that sparked the revamp of the Winter Star quilt pattern and the updated version walks you through making your own 8-colourway option. This is the very one I’ll be making with you in the upcoming Winter Star Quilt Along (details below). If you want to twin on our Winter Star quilts, then you can pick up a custom quilt kit here!
Here’s how the 8-colourway looks mocked up in these lovely solids.
WINTER STAR QUILT ALONG
The holidays are coming and now’s the perfect time to start your stitching, so you’re done well in advance of Christmas!
December is always such a busy month with lots of family gatherings, dinners out with friends and generally a time of social activity. To help keep the overwhelm at bay, I like to get my holiday planning done in advance. This means that I get to enjoy the festivities rather than stress sewing or shopping in a frenzy. If that sounds good to you too, then join me in the super laid back Winter Star Quilt Sew Along!
