Are you ready to sneak a peek? I hope so, because there’s a new guest for the What’s in Your Sewing Bag series, and I couldn’t be more excited for today’s special guest Sarah Holst from Sarah Made.
If my memory serves, I first ‘met’ Sarah on Instagram and, shortly thereafter, as pattern testers for Suzy Quilts. The first thing I ever noticed about Sarah’s work was how colourful and joyful it was. The second? The gorgeous photographs of quilts on beaches. As much as I love the winter wild, Sarah loves the beachside vibes.
The other crazy thing is that we both lived in Japan. It just seemed like every time I learned something new, it resonated or felt like we were twinning. Naturally, I felt an instant connection, and was beyond thrilled to get to meet in person at QuiltCon in Atlanta. I’m sadly missing out this year, so be sure to give Sarah a friendly hello if you see her!
You’ve no doubt seen her modern colourful work on the ‘gram, but if Sarah’s work is new to you, then I’m excited for you to get to know her, and the notions she loves to stitch with!
Without further ado, it’s time to take a peek inside Sarah’s sewing bag 😊
Let’s dive in!

Introduction
Introduction – tell us a little about yourself! How did you get started on your quilting journey?
I was originally a knitter, and I loved Purl Soho because of their beautiful yarn and projects. They also sell fabric and had a quilt tutorial for the Prism Quilt (tutorial here). After coming back to look at it time and time again, I decided to give it a try and I haven’t looked back.
Ok, first, I LOVE Purl Soho! It was the first online fabric shop that I was tempted to take the plunge and place a fabric order. I still have the make-up bags and brush roll set I made with those fabrics. The point in sharing that story is because I know the temptation their wares create for us 😉 So fun that you fell hook line and sinker in love with quilting right off the bat. I love that we both fell hard for quilting!

Sewing Bag
What kind of sewing bag do you have? (e.g. did you make it? Buy it?)
I have an Open Out Box Pouch (pattern by Aneela Hoey) made for me by my friend Gina. I love that the design of the pouch opens fully so everything is easy to access.
Pretty and practical designs are always a win-win. It is even more special when the item has been handmade by a friend!

All-Star Essentials
What are your all-star essentials? Your tried-and-true must-haves that you can never run out of?
I always keep these things on hand: 12wt and 8wt thread for hand quilting, Clover coin thimble, needle grips, clips, mini scissors, and a needle of course.
Our essentials are very similar. Although, I haven’t tried the coin thimble. I’ve always gone for the full leather one. Have you tried both? Is the coin version as comfortable?
Favourite Item
What is your favourite item in your kit? Why?
I love my needle minder by Alexia Abegg. It is a little yellow star, and it makes me happy every time I look at it.
OMGeee – ok, this is so strange and fun all in a good way! But I have a yellow butterfly mug made by Alexia that I got pretty much because I ran into you at QuiltCon, and you were waiting in the Ruby Star Society store line-up 😊. I was instantly drawn to that mug, and use it every day. This will now make me think of you and your lovely yellow star needle minder.

Surprise Item
What’s one thing we’d be surprised to find in your bag?
Probably not surprising, but I do try to keep a hair tie in there in case I need one 😊.
LOL – same! That and lip balm. Two things I always have on hand.
Quilt Kits Will Travel
When do you find yourself using your kit the most? (Travelling, on the sofa, attending sew-ins?)
Probably the sofa, but also on the go, usually when I am taking my kids out to meet up with friends or for soccer.
That also explains how you sneak in so much of your amazing hand quilting! Your stitch work is always a joy to see.

Travel Memory
What’s your favourite travel memory with your sewing bag?
Sewing on road trips. I feel like working on a project while traveling adds to the story of the quilt.
Agreed! I think that’s why I have such a special connection with my “F” Quilt as I travelled quite a bit while making that one. I can’t wait to one day sit with you and hear the stories behind your quilts 😊
