After announcing the Mouse Trap Block of the Month Quilt Along, it seemed fitting to share a dedicated post to the Mouse Trap Quilt that happens to be featured throughout the pattern, aka Abstract Version 1 the cover quilt 😉
This has been such a hard quilt to keep under wraps – ha! And a long time in the planning stages. Read on for all the details.

Story Behind Abstract Version 1
Allow me to introduce you to the OG Mouse Trap quilt composition.
You might recall in the story about the Mouse Trap quilt I had drawn a series of blocks, that I ended up turning into quilt blocks. That part was super fun, but what got me uber excited was playing with those shapes to create a quilt layout.
The composition you see on the cover of the Mouse Trap Quilt Pattern is the one that I fell in love with after my quilty play, and also the one I pitched along with Little Forest BOM back in the day.

Quilt Blocks
It features a combination of all 12 quilt blocks with some repetitions. The repetitions tend to be curve-heavy as I love incorporating organic movement and curves do that beautifully 😊
This quilt pattern is designed to encourage you to play with your own composition, so don’t shy away from the curves. Perfectly pieced curves require a little more precision, but that’s the whole point of a skill builder: to challenge yourself, step outside your comfort zone, learn, and grow!
Besides, there’re not that tough, and there’s always the Mouse Trap BOM Course if you need extra guidance along the way 😉
Fabrics Featured
It has been quite a while since I designed this, and I’m hard-pressed to remember how I originally came up with this colourway. It was either from playing with colour cards or it was born at the computer. Either way, I do know that they’re based on AGF Pure Solids, which made it super easy when it came time to bring her to life several years later.

Quilting
This doesn’t happen very often, in fact, it’s only ever happened once before. But for this one, I really wanted to send it out to be long-armed, and it’s been years since I’ve wanted to collaborate with Lilo from Trace Creek Quilting.
Once I had the quilt top complete, I didn’t wait long before reaching out to Lilo. She’s got a nice streamlined intake process, and one fun option was leaving the panto option “to be discussed”, whereby Lilo reaches out to help guide you on your panto selection.
This was so beyond helpful. She sent me a few options to get things started, and I wrote back saying which I liked, and then asked her to surprise me – ha!
So, opening my parcel was a thrilling joy to see which she opted for! The quilting on the Mouse Trap quilt is Arches and it’s just so pretty! I’m thrilled with how the quilting turned out and love how it adds texture and curviness without taking away from the quilt composition.

Finishing Touches
I’m not sure what happened with my binding, but I clearly didn’t plan my fabric ordering properly as I was short on colour 2 to fully bind my Mouse Trap quilt. I opted to incorporate a little of colour 4 to keep the colours harmonious and not too scrappy looking.
I pulled out every blue and purple thread I had on hand, and none were exact matches. But this blue pearl cotton thread was a close match and one I’ve used on so many different quilts. It’s a remarkably versatile colour, and a must-have in my thread stash.

Mouse Trap Block of the Month
The Mouse Trap Block of the Month Quilt Along kicks off on January 15, 2025. A new quilt block pattern will be released on the 15th of every month until all 12 blocks have been released along with the final quilt instructions on December 15, 2025. Each new block introduces a new quilting technique or a new approach on how to use the quilting technique. The real fun is deciding what layout you’d like to make. You can choose from 1 of the 7 layouts featured in the quilt pattern, or you can choose to design a unique layout to you! Take the optional Mouse Trap video-on-demand class for added step-by-step guidance.

The hardest part with this Mouse Trap quilt abstract version 1 (aka the Cover Quilt!) was capturing the colours accurately! I just wish you could reach out and feel this one, between the gorgeous fabrics and that glorious quilting, the hand feel is just yummalicious!

Oh, this is really a lovely composition and design, Shannon. It will be fun to see how quilters make this their own!
Thank you so much, Yvonne! That’s exactly what I’m hoping for and am excited to see how everyone brings their own quilty flare! I know quilt composition can be tricky, so I’m hoping the Mouse Trap quilt pattern helps bring clarity and the fun to be had!
