Little Forest Block of the Month Quilt Along 2024 by Shannon Fraser Designs - The twelfth block to be released is the Pine Tree. You’re nearing the end of the 2024 Little Forest BOM. Just one more block to piece and then you can see your Little Forest quilt top come to life! But first, you need to make the Pine Tree quilt block.

Bravo on tackling your Larch Tree quilt blocks! There’s been quite a bit of foundation paper piecing in the QAL, and each block challenged you to build on that skill set.

You’ve done an amazing job sticking with the quilt along and exploring the different quilt techniques. Just look at all the techniques you’ve covered already:

  • The importance of tracking your progress through the Little Forest BOM Journal.
  • Small piecing in the Bonsai Quilt Block, which will set the foundation of your quilting skills.
  • How to stitch and flip (aka snowballing) in the Stacked Pine Quilt Block, which is an introduction to piecing on the bias!
  • How to achieve nice crisp points with Foundation Paper Piecing and how to piece curves in the Cherry Tree block.
  • How to layer motifs with needle turn appliqué in the Little Forest block.
  • Small piecing and FPP without as much wiggle room in the Lodgepole block.
  • How to piece oval curves in the Poplar block.
  • How to strip piece in the Striped Pine block.
  • Working with multiple FPP templates at the same time in the Fraser Fir quilt block.
  • Learning how to piece and trim half-square triangles (HRT) in the Twin Peaks quilt block.
  • How to raw edge appliqué in the Maple Tree quilt block.
  • How to work with multiple angled foundation paper piecing templates in the Larch quilt block.

There are a couple of techniques that you’ve already tackled in the quilt along, so this month should be easy peasy for you to tackle. A nice easy win before pulling your quilt top together!

Story Behind the Pine Tree Quilt Block

The Pine Tree quilt block was among the first blocks that I designed for the Little Forest quilt. We have a ton of pine trees here in Quebec, so it’s not surprising that this variety pops up a couple of times in the quilt.

But just like in nature, there are slight differences between the types of pine trees dotting our landscape, and I thought it would be fun to capture some of those variances in quilt block format.

It also allowed me to sneak in different forms of stripes to add interest and fun to your little arboretum!

Quilting Technique Featured

It’s all about strip piecing and piecing triangles in the Pine Tree quilt block.

Both techniques have already been explored, which should make for a super easy piecing session. Just keep in mind the tips I shared for the Bonsai quilt block (which focuses on keeping your stitching nice and accurate), and the Striped Pine quilt block (which deals with piecing triangles).

With the holidays upon us, I saved this one for last so that you could have a quick win! Plus, I wanted to encourage you to stick with your piecing momentum and pull your Little Forest Quilt top together too!

The Pine Tree quilt block is quite straight forward to stitch up, especially with the included paper template. Don't forget to use your quilt block labels to help you stay organized. Read my top tips for the Little Forest BOM on the blog #LittleForestBOM #trianglequilt #quiltalong #quilttemplates

Top Tips

While this block is super easy to stitch up, sometimes when it’s really simple we tend to make a mistake. Am I right?!

So, my top tip is to slow down and focus on the task at hand.

The Pine Tree quilt block is the twelfth block to be released in the 2024 Little Forest Block of the Month Quilt Along. Join the quilty fun and level up your quilting skills in this modern skill builder! #LittleForestBOM #trianglepiecing #quilt

Caution

Just like in the Striped Pine Tree quilt block, the sides of your triangle canopy like to stretch out, so be careful that you’re not pulling or tugging on your fabric as you stitch that long side seam.

Pins can help keep things from shifting on you!
