About the Author of Not-Your-Typical Jelly Roll Quilts Book
This cute book is written by my quilty friend Michelle Lander Cain, you might know her as From Bolt to Beauty. This happens to be her first book, and I was beyond touched that she reached out to include me in her release.
As it tends to happen, our paths had crossed online, but we didn’t officially meet until my first QuiltCon in Atlanta. I had the chance to go out to dinner with her and ended up splitting a pizza. Nothing quite like bonding over food, right?!
We’ve been connected ever since, so when Michelle told me she’d written a book I was super excited for her, and then doubly curious about her focus on jelly rolls.
I have one. I haven’t used it. It’s been sitting in my fabric cabinet for ages now – lol.

How This Project Came to Me
It was a dark dreary winter afternoon when I logged into my Instagram account and found a DM waiting for me from Michelle. Her note was super sweet, inviting me to give her new book an honest review. I’m always happy to support my quilty friends when I can, so I was obviously all in to support her.
But I gave her my honest confession, that while I think jelly rolls are super cute, I’ve yet to work with them!
You know me and my love for yardage, so what I hadn’t anticipated was how much this book would make me smile.

Modern Quilter’s Review of Not-Your-Typical Jelly Rolls Quilts Book
My First Impressions
By the time my copy arrived in the mail, it was early Spring, although it wasn’t quite feeling that way with the recent snowstorm in mid-April. You know how Mother Nature likes to keep us on our toes at that time of the year 😉
In any event, it just so happened that I found myself on the sofa trying to navigate a migraine. Instead of being on screens, I decided to read through Not-Your-Typical Jelly Roll Quilts book and found myself smiling as I flipped through the fun, colourful and adorable projects. I also enjoyed learning that Michelle loves crossword puzzles as much as I do. And creating quilt patterns featuring jelly rolls gets her quilty brain fired up!
Her energy is super uplifting and it’s contagious!
If you can get me fired up when my head is sore, then I’m all in!

Features I Love
As someone whose quilting time is pretty full, taking on another project can be tricky figuring out how much time I can set aside. No doubt this happens to you, too, where you’re in the mood to make something, but don’t necessarily want it to be long or complex. This is where I loved Michelle’s pattern rating system.
Rating System
The adorable thread spools offer a complexity range of 1 to 3, with 1 being straightforward and 3 being more complex.
I appreciated this from a time-gauging perspective, but I can see how it would be super helpful from a challenging perspective, too.
Photo Styling
If you’re just in the mood to sit and look at pretty quilt photos, then this does that in spades. The photo styling is really well done and shows off the bright colours beautifully. It reminds me of the joy I get from pulling out my Sunday Morning Quilts book. Sometimes you just need a little inspiration, right?!
Instructions
The instructions are super clear, with step graphics to match if you’re more of a visual learner like me 😊
Handy Tips
I love that Michelle broke down the anatomy of a jelly roll strip and how to properly measure it for cutting. It’s tips and attention to detail like these that I appreciate, and it actually answered a question I’ve often wondered about.
Projects in the Book
There are 14 different quilt projects to choose from, and the quilts are broken into chapters based on size. So, table runners and small wall hangings, small throws, large throws, and bed-size quilts. You can also opt to make the projects larger or smaller simply by making more or fewer blocks.
This leads me to my quilty dilemma.

Quilty Dilemma
My biggest challenge was figuring out which project I wanted to make. I heard about there being a super cute cat quilt in the book, so my mind immediately went to that, but then I spotted the Tag Sale Floral, Butterfly Season, and the Five-Star Experience, not to mention All The Xs, and my choice wasn’t so evident.
In the end, I opted to go with Meow Mates because, well first it’s cute, and second it had a one spool rating, which meant it fit my quilty schedule.

Meow Mates Quilted Wall Hanging Details
I’m happy to report that the spool rating system was accurate! The Meow Mates quilt block came together super quick.
The longest part was deciding on what fabrics to feature – ha!

Fabric Featured
Since I was only making one block, I opted to forgo the jelly roll and feature some 2 ½” strips sitting in my overflowing scrap bins 😉
As I pulled my bins out, I was instantly drawn to the yellows and decided to go for an ombré look focusing on all my yellow scraps. With a little pop of coral for the nose!
Quilty Memories
One of the things I love about working with fabric scraps is how they instantly transport me back to the projects I originally made.
For instance, the cat’s face is from the original Reverberance quilt, the muzzle is from the Velvet Showcase where I made a Jolly Jelly Table Runner, and the eyes are from…I can’t seem to recall! I checked my blog to see if I could place it, and I can’t. Do you know what it’s from?! The ears are from this Harvest Falls wall hanging, and the background is linen leftover from making the Cloud Suring quilt.
To finish it off, I opted to pull some cat-centric prints that I featured in the original Flight Plan quilt, as those yarn balls seemed super fitting!

Quilting & Binding
I was on a roll and decided to get the Meow Mates block quilted up right after piecing. I was amazed that I got the entire project done in an afternoon. Which means I can attest to the fact that the one-spool rating was indeed accurate.
Since I wanted to keep the focus on the patchwork, I decided to go with simple 1” straight-line machine quilting in 50wt Aurifil Thread. I was going to feature this yellow thread but decided last minute to keep it super understated with the beige thread. But I did pull out this grello pearl cotton thread for the big stitch hand binding, just to add an extra pop of texture 😉

Jelly rolls allow you to make a coordinated, fun quilt easily. Jelly roll quilts are easily adapted to scrap quilts-a win-win in my book!
I love jelly rolls, because they make fast and fun quilts and they look so cute on the shelf. 🙂
I love how all the fabric in a jellyroll plays together. It takes away some of the stress of fabric pulls and lets you get straight to sewing.
I’ve never used a jellyroll despite liking other pre-cuts. A jelly-roll cat bed quilt would be fun to make as a gift for a child. So cute!
I love Jelly Rolls because they are so versatile, easy to store, and come in a myriad of colors.
Thanks for this lovely review! The Meow Mates quilt is too cute! I love jelly roll projects because most of the cutting is already done for you so they are usually pretty quick projects. You also get all the fabrics in a collection for a very reasonable price when you buy a jelly roll!
Jelly rolls as a precut are great for beginner quilters. I have found some interesting project patterns perfectly designed for jelly rolls. Love sewing with them.
Your cat is so adorable!!! Great choice of fabrics.
I love jelly rolls because they’re so convenient and it’s wonderful to have a set of coordinating fabrics all together ready to use.
What I love about jelly rolls is that there’s every piece of a collection and I do t have to worry about coordination!
I love to work with jelly rolls as I am not great at making Ching up fabrics. Cutting fabrics give me a fit at times too. Jelly rolls are the way to help with me!!
Jelly-Roll are not a regular part of my patchwork/quilting projects, but they are so useful when you need a lot of small squares and rectangles for a “fast work”… No digging in the scrap bins, no colors to(try to) match, it helps when time is running out too fast ! 🙂
Jelly rolls aren’t my go to precut. Seems like this book could expand my view
I love having jelly rolls in a basket looking cute in my quilt room, and also they’re available for a fast quilt.
I don’t buy a lot of jelly rolls, but I cut my own 2 1/2 inch strips from larger excess fabric scraps and keep them in a bin. This book would be a great way to use them, I think.
I belong to a quilt guild and was helping to make ‘comfort quilts’ for members in our community. I was in need of finding fabric that was youth friendly and remembered I had a jellyroll of dragon flies in many beautiful colors. The quilt came together quickly while also being inviting to snuggle in!
I love the variety of patterns in Jelly Rolls, and full-length strips of fabrics allow for so many design possibilities!
I like them for scrappy work – you get many coordinating strips in one roll.
I don’t usually buy jelly rolls, but I do have a really pretty one I’d love to use, but no clue how what pattern to use to show the pretty floral prints to the max!
I don’t use jelly rolls often, but when I do I like it because it is a no brainer about whether the fabric will play well together. Not having to spend time going through my stash and choosing coordinating fabric helps me get a project finished in a shorter time frame.
Oh my gosh, I just love a cat quilt. I haven’t used jelly rolls very much and I think I have two on hand. This book would be a great way to get those two rolls used.
I love that they are precut and that they are coordinating fabrics so I can get started without having to pick out a bunch of fabric
I live jelly rolls for the wonderful colour combination for rugs, bowls and making piano key borders. Scott Flannaghan created a beautiful flannel quilt using a flannel jelly roll, I made a few🙂. I would love to have more jelly roll ideas!
Jelly rolls simplify preparations — the 2.5″ strips are there waiting for us to cut to desired lengths and start piecing.
I love to look at colorful/happy jelly rolls on my studio shelf! They give me hope…they lighten my heart…and assure that I WILL be able to once again, someday, come into my studio and make something lovely! (Caring for elderly parents has become a full time job.)
I love jelly rolls because most of the cutting has been done for you.
I love that jelly rolls have coordinated fabrics that will work together. If it means less time to cut fabric, I’m all for that too!
I love jelly rolls because:
1) you get to sample all the fabrics in a fabric line, all in one project;
2) jelly rolls are easy to use because at least part of the cutting is already done for you and that saves you time; and,
3) jelly roll projects can be stitched up really quickly, so you can get more projects completed!
What’s not to love!!
I love jelly rolls because cutting down yardage is my least favorite part of quilting
Occasionally I need a quick project. Since I fret over picking fabrics, having a jelly roll in my supplies is delightful. Finding jelly roll patterns that I like is often the hard part!
I would like trying work with the jelly roll for my futur creative project. I am discovering the Quilting and I love that…
Thank you
The more i use jelly rolls the more versatile I find them. This book looks like it has some great patterns.
Sounds like a great book to have on my quilt bookshelf
maryquilter50@gmail.com
Jelly rolls are so appealing but I’ve never used them.
Jelly rolls are the ultimate way to obtain and store fabric for scrappy versions of quilts. Probably 75% of pieces for a quilt can be cut from a 2.5 inch strip. I always reach for my bin of strips to start any scrappy quilt. They are perfect for adding sparkle to your scrappy quilts. I also find they seem to be the least popular of the precuts and I can pick them up at a discount.
I love how the fabrics are all coordinated and cut precisely. It makes quilting soooo easy.
Jelly Rolls – yay!
* they are so pretty sitting on the shelf in your sewing room
* you don’t have to handle all of that yardage cutting strips
I love all the different patterns you can make with a jelly roll. It’s so fun and depending on the pattern you choose it’s a quilt you can get done in a few hours or a couple of days. Left over jelly roll strips make fast and easy strip quilts too
Congratulations, Michelle! You’re the lucky winner of the Not Your Typical Jelly Roll Quilts eBook! I’ll email you the details!
I love that jelly rolls have pre-coordinated fabrics all pulled together—perfect for small projects! I like making placemats out of them.
Every day I learn some new way to use. Jelly roll they save a lot of time
You cat is adorable! I love that you get all the fabrics in a fabric line for a relatively affordable price.
I am one of THOSE quilters who always underestimates how long it will take me to make a quilt top, so jelly rolls fit my bill! I can stretch them out and visualize without cutting into my larger fabric pieces. I also appreciate the accuracy of the jelly roll piece; I have older hands that sometimes don’t hold the rulers like I should. Jelly rolls insure I have a head start on an accurate block.
And so many choices in each roll!
It really was hard to narrow down the choice of what to make. Your Meow Mates mini is fantastic!
Thank you, Yvonne! I’ve been loving seeing everyone’s make during the book hop. It’s been giving me a chance to live vicariously through the different projects – ha!
Jelly Rolls are so very versatile. The fabric coordination and cutting are already done for you. As a busy working mother when I first began quilting time was of the essence. Many of my first quilts were made with jelly rolls. Any leftover strips are perfect for smaller projects or scrappy bindings.
I love jelly rolls because of their versatile use and quick piecing abilities!
I love that Jelly rolls are ready to grab and sew . . . with fabrics that look good together. No fail. No agonizing. They don’t take up much space so they are easy to store and look cute and inspiring until they get used.
Jelly rolls are wonderful color coordinated fabrics and already cut. Not more wonky cuts when you make your own 2 1/2 inch strips.
Love your cat Matt.
I love jelly rolls for the ease of use of a variety of fabrics they offer. They also make many pattern designs easy to create.
The “handy tips” of actually learning the anatomy of a jelly roll sounds super interesting to me! YES PLEASE!
Jelly rolls can be used in so many projects, from scrappy to modern style quilts, etc. These precuts are so colorful just stacked on your shelf!!
Jelly rolls are coordinated and so versatile. I’ve used them for quick Charity strip quilts, bindings and teaching sewing to my granddaughters.
I never Made a thing with a jellyroll. So a book with patterns and explanation would be a great gift.
By the way, I love the kitty 😺
I have a bunch of jellyrolls I’ve “saving” waiting for a project, they make coordinating fabrics so much easier. So many cute quilts in this book.
Jelly rolls are like adding jewels to a quilted project in that they can add pops of color and visual interest. They are convenient and provide fabric variety.
Love the cat design and my cat gives a paw of approval!
Love that jelly rolls are the perfect width for so many projects and are the same line of fabric!
I love how jelly rolls contain the whole line of fabrics. No trying to match fabrics. You Meow Mates block is so cute. Love the idea of pearl cotton in the binding.
I love the variety of prints and colors you get in a jelly roll. I love how the patters flow. They really are fun to work with!
I love jelly rolls; easy to use for binding or cutting into small blocks to snowball corners, or even just to use as is.
Jelly rolls allow you to play with a whole line of material. So fun!
I love that I don’t have to worry about choosing colours when using a jelly roll as I already have a lovely mix from one line of fabric. Colour is always my biggest challenge when starting a project.
I like how easy a jelly roll is to use for a faster project! Also, the book looks lovely and nice to see some fresh patterns.
The cutting is already done and they are easy to sew into strip sets.
Jelly rolls offer versatility of color play that lends a fun quality to any project. They are adaptable to small shapes and lend a variety of possibilities to even a landscape!
A jelly roll allows a beginner quilter the freedom of expression with fabric and gives permission to the experienced quilter to flourish.
I keep several rolls on hand and I use them in part or whole depending on the project. Thank you for inspiring with your book!
I started quilting during the pandemic. My intro to quilting was with a jelly roll pattern by Donna Jordan of Jordan Fabrics. I love the coordinated fabrics of a jelly roll because when I’m let loose at the fabric store to choose yardage…my wallet clenches. To put it simply; I don’t know when to stop pulling fabric. With the jelly roll patterns, at least the boundaries are set for me. 😉
I’ve never used jelly rolls, but it looks like a fun way to have fabric already pre-cut and ready to work on a project.
I love using Jelly Rolls because you get a strip of each print in the line. This gives a great scrappy yet cohesive look.
I love putting fabrics together for a quilt, but it takes time. Sometime, I don’t want to think and just know that the colours will all work together, that’s when I love using jellyrolls. Also, you can’t beat the fabric variety!
I love playing with jelly rolls. The colors match great and I’m all about color! It’s easy to cut. They stack so pretty in my sewing room. I made my sister a simple strippy quilt with a Villa Rosa pattern, turned out lovely! Great for fast quilts!
I love jelly rolls because they are so easy & quick to create something that looks difficult . Love the variety of colours & designs
I like jelly rolls as I can get a full line of fabrics to play with without buying a lot of yardage. If I love the outcome I can buy the pieces from the line that I want more of.
I like jelly rolls as I can get a full line of fabrics to play with without buying a lot of yardage. If I love the outcome I can buy the pieces from the line that I want more
I have a Jelly Roll addiction, the array of colors instantly attract me. I can buy guilt free as they just look good sitting on a shelf. 🙂 i am always looking for Jelly Roll patterns when looking for a project to start. Thanks for sharing this book!
I love getting all the fabrics in a collection in a cute little bundle!
Jelly rolls are the best when I want to forego the time it takes to make a good colour pull and to begin with the cutting well underway.
I love Jelly Rolls because they are so versatile and feature perfect colors and prints that go together so I can create such beautiful projects like those in the Not Your Typical Jelly Roll Quilts book. Love your cat block!
Jelly rolls give the quilter coordinated fabrics from one entire line. They make cutting easy for 2″ squares and various length rectangles.
i love that you get a little snap shot of all the fabric in one little strip. They are the handiest thing to just grab and start sewing with also. i have several quilts and one made from a jelly roll is always the easiest to do.
thanks,
I’ve only made one quilt with a jelly roll but I love how much variety of coordinating fabrics there are to pick from!
I love looking at the colors from the side and that I get a bit of each fabric in a collection.
Jelly rolls are a time saver.
I have never made a quilt with jelly rolls, although I do have a couple in my stash. I think I’ve been waiting for this book for the perfect pattern…
Find myself going to jelly rolls and all precuts more frequently, especially for quick charity quilts that I don’t need to overthink. Fresh inspiration would be great!
I’m very inspired to do my very first Jelly roll quilt and Michelle’s book looks like the perfect companion to get me started!!
I love working with jelly rolls, they are so easy to work with and make such beautiful quilts!
I checked out the different patterns included in this book and there are quite a few that have peaked my interest!! I even have a jelly roll waiting in the cupboard. I’ve made a few jelly roll quilts and I’m always game for a new one to try
I have never used a jelly roll, but your review of the book has me intrigued. I can’t wait to try one of the quilts in the book.
Jelly rolls provide coordinated color combinations, a real time saver!!
I love jelly rolls because the fabrics are guaranteed to coordinate.
I love jelly rolls. They stack nicely on the shelf and so easy to work with. Great patterns. I can’t wait to make the hexie quilt.
In my scrapbin are a lot of 2,5″ strips, my personal yellyroll🤗. I do love to have a purpose for them! The book Michelle wrote looks modern, just the type of quilty stuff I like to make.
Looking forward to see more from the book!
The colors usually draw me to a particular jelly roll. I love the time saving factor of the precut strips – it allows me to create something a little bit faster. I have made a jelly roll quilts & rugs & scrappy binding with the leftovers
I love that jelly rolls allow me to “sample” a fabric line at an affordable price. But, like many others, I have a tendency to leave them rolled up rather than using them! So silly. This book may be just the thing I need to start putting those pretty fabrics into pretty projects.
I love jelly rolls. They give the perfect variety to make your project.
Love Jelly Rolls!
Jelly rolls are just a fun way to use a whole collection of fabrics. Scrappy jelly rolls from my stash remind me of all the quilts I made that preceded this quilt.
I love your meow mates. So cute. Thank you
I like jelly rolls because the strips all coordinate so nicely
I don’t usually buy jelly rolls because I love to mix and match fabric from multiple collections. I’m also a super scrappy quilter. However, when fabric is cut and added to my scrap system, my fabric size to cut is 2.5” squares and strips. Shannon knows how I feel about cats and her choice of project leaves me giddy. The book seems fresh and unexpected. Not your average jelly roll book and that’s exciting!
Having 2.5″ strips of a favorite fabric designer collection is the perfect way to make a fun quilt without having a lot of scraps and odd pieces leftover. Jelly rolls are easy to cut into squares and rectangles, too. Plus, the leftover strips make great bindings! I’d love to win an e-copy of Michelle’s book!
I love to buy jellyrolls for the variety of coordinating fabrics they include. I recently saw where a quilt shop was selling “make your own jelly rolls” what a unique idea that is!
I love Jelly rolls! They are easy to use with some background fabric, and make a quick quilt if I need a donation or charity quilt.
I LOVE this Kitty mat that you made!!!! I would buy the book just for this pattern…
There are so many patterns you can make with jelly rolls. Also, it’s an easy way to get all of the fabrics in a line, although they are in small strips.
What I love most about jelly rolls is the number of fabrics in the roll! Who doesn’t love 20+ different fabrics from the same designer. All matchy matchy. 💓 💕 💖 We often are cutting our fat quarters into 2.5″ strips anyway. Love them. Kathleen Moraghan @Allotallove
I love that you get all the fabrics in the line in one sweet precut. Can’t wait to get her book!
I love the curated fabrics. There is nothing better than finding a collection with beautiful contrasting and coordinating prints!
I like the size of fabrics in jelly rolls, easy to work with them. You chose perfect fabrics for your cat. It’s great that the book has a project difficulty rating system.
I love getting a small amount of each fabric in a line and supplementing with the ones I love or a background fabric to create a quick, coordinating quilt!
Sometimes you want to sew and need a quick fix without too much hassle: that’s when the Jelly Roll comes in. Sincerely I have done one Jelly Roll race and wasn’t that convinced so would love to try other things. And like any bundle the colour coordination is great !!b
My least favourite part of quilting is the cutting, so I think jelly rolls and other precuts are awesome! Also, if you like a fabric line, you can have a piece of every design. Thank you for the review and giveaway!
Jelly rolls are happy surprises, so much fun!
I love jelly rolls because I don’t enjoy cutting as much as sewing and the fabrics already coordinate! It cuts down my cutting time by a bunch and I can see the quilt come together quicker.
I would say my favourite part is by far the easy of being able to start. You don’t have to think about color choices, you don’t have to do too much cutting and it comes together so well
How do I love jelly rolls? Let me count the ways…
Seriously though, I love JRs when making baby or wall quilts or rugs. No agonizing over color choice since the pieces are in an already vetted collection and straight that are straight, making it more likely my 1/4” seams produce matching points. Gotta love the technical uniformity of a JR!
Jelly rolls are just so cute. Is it wrong to just like how they look, then how they feel as you pull them open? I should use them more than I do, but I do like to collect them.
Although I have been quilting for a while now I have never used Jelly Rolls. So this would be a fun way to start. Lots of cat lovers in my family, the wall hanging is going to be a project for me for sure!
