Congratulations, you’re over the halfway point of the Mouse Trap Block of the Month Quilt Along. Time flies when you’re having quilty fun! Good thing there’s still plenty to look forward to, and this month it’s all about the Flag quilt block.
I commend you for sticking with last month’s block. Curve piecing can feel super intimidating, especially when it’s in one piece like the Half Moons block. Seriously well done! By stretching yourself outside your comfort zone, you’ve grown and expanded on your quilting repertoire. Just look at all you’ve already leaned in the Mouse Trap BOM:
- How to piece quarter circles in the Rainbow block.
- How to trim up those adorable half-rectangle triangles in the Triangle Points block
- How to work with templates and piecing angles in the Sticks block.
- Traditional piecing in the Mosaic block.
- Learning how to line up triangle pieces with the Apex block.
- How to piece half-circles with the Half Moons Blocks.
You did such an amazing job last month that this month will feel like a walk in the park. 😉
Today I’m covering:
- The story behind the Flag quilt block
- Composition play to be had
- Quilting technique featured
- Materials required
- Top Tips
- Caution

Story Behind the Flag Quilt Block
The Flag block design was the sixth drawing in my geometric series. What I love about this one is the simplicity of the lines paired with the negative space. There’s breathing room there that encourages me to take a moment to pause, reflect, and just breathe.

Composition Play
The Flag block is so simple, but simplicity shouldn’t be underestimated. There’s something quite beautiful about simple.
You don’t have to look far in the art or quilting world to see that this is true.
The clean lines of the modern quilt block add lovely linear details to your composition.
The sharp lines can also help frame your composition.
Something to ponder!
Quilting Technique Featured
It’s all about strip piecing in the Flag quilt block. These are skinnier but not too skinny strips.
Just take your time, and you shouldn’t have any issues with this one.
I actually lay the entire block out on my cutting mat and just settle in for a chain-piecing session.
Before you know it, all you’re left with is your flagpole to attach. Deceptively easy, but also exactly where you can get tripped up!
Check the caution section below to see what I mean!

Top Tips
Be gentle with your pieces as you’re piecing them together and pressing them. You don’t want to distort the fabric and have it bow on you.

Caution
Double-check before you attach Piece D. That will make a big difference on your layout…ask me how I know – ha!
