Story Behind the Mosaic Quilt Block
The Mosaic block was inspired by my love for mosaic tiles – hence the very clever and original name – ha!
In all seriousness, what I love about this block is that it adds some grounding details to your composition. The squares and rectangles give your eye solid contrast against the sharp angles and curves you’ve been incorporating through the Rainbow, Triangle Point, and Sticks blocks.

Composition Play
Even though these are simple shapes, the intricate layout creates added detail in your composition without it feeling heavy and overly ornate.
Have fun playing with both the colour placement and layout of the block. Both of those features will create new and interesting layouts to add fun details to your final Mouse Trap composition.
Plus, did I mention, the simple shapes are also super fun to stitch up?!
Quilting Technique Featured
It’s all about traditional piecing with the Mosaic quilt block this month.
What’s fun about traditional piecing is that there’s no need for pins or templates or worrying about biased edges. It’s a nice, relaxed piecing session that focuses on matching up straight edges. The biggest challenge is making sure you keep your piecing nice and straight!
I always love coming back to simple piecing after I’ve worked with curves and templates. It feels like a walk in the quilty park – ha!

Top Tips
Cutting your pieces accurately will come in super handy here. If your pieces are already cut to the same size, then it’s easier to match them up and keep the pieces lining up.
You can pull in a seam gauge if you’re having a tough time keeping your seams nice and straight.

Caution
The biggest thing to look out for is your dog feeds taking in more fabric underneath than on top.
If you’re finding one of your pieces is stretching out beyond the bottom piece, then you might need to adjust your sewing machine’s presser foot tension settings.
