This might be a block-of-the-month quilt along, but nothing says that you have to use all of the blocks featured in the Mouse Trap Quilt! That’s the beauty of playing with your composition, and Abstract Version 4, the wovens one, is here to show off the quilty possibilities awaiting you!
If this is the first you’ve heard about the Mouse Trap BOM, the quilt is designed as a modern skill builder to encourage you to challenge your piecing skills. The quilt along kicked off on January 15, 2025, with a new quilt block being released every month and you’ll have the month to stitch it up. Each new geometric block introduces a new quilting technique or combination of techniques to help you level up your piecing. The real fun is playing with the blocks to create new ‘mouse trap’ layouts!

Mouse Trap Quilt The Wovens One Colourway
It didn’t take me long to pull together my colourway for Abstract Version 4.
Well, in fairness, I didn’t entirely plan to make Abstract Version 4 in these wovens.
What happened was that I was in full-on test mode while writing the Mouse Trap BOM Quilt Pattern, and I tend to prefer using remnants to yardage for my test blocks. But I had quite a bit of fabric left over from making my Green Chambray Quilted Coat, and I absolutely adored the feel and colour of the pull.
After making a couple of test blocks, I got really excited about how different it looked and felt compared to the same blocks made in quilting cotton. So, when I realized that I could probably eke out enough to make an entire quilt, it got me super curious and fired up to see what it would look like in quilt format (rather than garment format).
You might spot that I snuck in a print within my Rainbow blocks. And that came to be simply because I’d run out of fabric and needed to make due. What I love about sometimes just needing to make it work, is that it leads to fun discoveries. I love that the added detail of the stripe within the print adds to the movement of the Rainbow block. You know my love for stripes, so this was a particularly fun ‘quilty win’ 😉

Mouse Trap Abstract Version 4 Composition
Ok, now for the piece de resistance, the cool composition featured in Abstract Version 4.
This one is all about featuring your favourite Mouse Trap quilt blocks. I opted to include a mix of both curvy and more linear block designs to create a little intrigue and break it up from feeling too linear and rigid. Curves do that beautifully 😉
The other element I incorporated was repetition. Each block is repeated at least once. The Sticks block is repeated 4 times, one for each block layout option.

Mouse Trap Block Design
I want to highlight that last point because it’s a key feature of the Mouse Trap quilt pattern. The blocks can be pieced in reverse to create a new layout option. You can also rotate your blocks 180 degrees, which adds even more options to your design.
When you start playing with the repetition, layout, and rotation of your blocks, the number of composition options grows. This means there are lots of new Mouse Trap Quilts that are just waiting to be created by you!
To help you do this, you’ll find some mini quilt graphics in your Welcome Package (sent after you purchase the Mouse Trap BOM Quilt Pattern). You can print those out, along with the ‘Design Your Own’ colouring page to play around and create your own Mouse Trap layout.
You can even take this one step further and see it come to life digitally over on PreQuilt!

Hand Quilting Wovens
Well, it took me several months, but I finally have a quilt to show you!
Hand quilting this one wasn’t the best decision given that I didn’t have a finished quilt to show you for months! But, as I mentioned to you in my weekly newsletter (sign up here), this one kept calling me to hand-quilt her. Between the lovely feel of the wovens and the added texture the big stitch hand quilting created, this one is beyond scrummalicious!
If you want to add some quilty texture to your Mouse Trap quilt, here’s an overview of what you’ll need to dive into big stitch hand quilting.

Binding
Since I was so focused on hand quilting her, I got sidetracked and ended up using the fabric in another project – oops! So, I had to pause to order some more to make the binding.
It didn’t take me long to get the binding made. I also big stitch hand quilted the binding in this gorgeous deep red colour. It picks up beautifully on the deep rust colour of the backing.

Mouse Trap Block of the Month
The Mouse Trap Block of the Month Quilt Along kicks off on January 15, 2025. A new quilt block pattern will be released on the 15th of every month until all 12 blocks have been released along with the final quilt instructions on December 15, 2025. Each new block introduces a new quilting technique or a new approach on how to use the quilting technique. The real fun is deciding what layout you’d like to make. You can choose from 1 of the 7 layouts featured in the quilt pattern, or you can choose to design a unique layout to you! Take the optional Mouse Trap video-on-demand class for added step-by-step guidance.

I’m so excited to finally get to share a finished quilt with you! It may have taken longer than anticipated, but I don’t regret a second of it. This Mouse Trap quilt the wovens one is extra snuggleriffic, especially with all that hand quilting!
If you haven’t already, be sure to get your Mouse Trap BOM Quilt Pattern and sign up for the Mouse Trap BOM Newsletter so you don’t miss any of the quilt-along details 😊 And for added guidance, take the optional Mouse Trap Course!

Just sooooo good! I need to make a wovens quilt of some sort eventually. You’re right – it’s scrumalicious!!! Handquilting was the right decision.
I 100% encourage you to dive in and start working with wovens, Hydee! They feel glorious and are the absolute best for snuggling with 🙂 Add in all the hand stitching, and it takes the coziness to the next level!!
