You’re more than halfway through the 30 Days of Improv QAL! Let’s keep it going with some quilt play with improv triangles.

I’m so proud of you for sticking with the quilting challenge and seeing the fun to be had when you let loose, abandon all patterns and create based on your instincts!

This past week you’ve been focused on playing with triangles in your quilt block composition and I just adore the angles this shape offers you!

SHAPE OF THE WEEK – TRIANGLES

Last week’s play with polygons has set you up for piecing success this week! Those gentle angles you started working with will now take center stage with this week’s quilt play with improv triangles.

Enjoy exploring the different types of triangles in your piecing. Think large and small angles and mixing them to create lots of dynamic movement.

See how your fabric behaves when you work with long bias edges. This is what’s fun about improv, you get to explore and experiment to see what effect combining different fabrics or fabric cuts with your improv piecing has on your ultimate composition.

Lean into those angles!

DAY 1

I started off by creating some matchy-matchy strip sets where I paired the peaches together in one set and the purples in another. From there I just had fun cutting out some triangle shapes!

Pulling different shapes into the mix allowed me to add variety and dimension.

I love that it’s a combination of both pieced units and trimmings from previous blocks. Tiny piecing for the win 😉

It was a great reminder to follow what gets you curious and excited. Tiny piecing does that for me every time!

DAY 2

Today I ended up combining strip pieced elements to create triangle shapes that formed a hexie!

A little slice and dicing led to new shapes that I worked into this final layout.

Always interesting to see how a block evolves from initial concept to final composition.

DAY 3

My session kicked off with some bits leftover from previous days. From there I thought of making a log cabin style and built the block up using strips in different colours.

I love how wonky and moody she turned out, while still featuring the shape of the week – triangles!

DAY 4

It was all about play today! I just dove in and started piecing trimmings together.

She features quite a bit of tiny piecing and lots of puzzling to get her to fit!

This one was a great reminder to not get attached to a layout too early in the piecing journey and that you sometimes need to shift your plan as the composition evolves.

Not my fav of the bunch, but you can’t love ‘em all 😉

DAY 5

Lots of ideas came to mind as I pulled a triangle trimming onto the cutting mat.

Right off the bat, I was curious about exploring just 3 colours in this block. Specifically, I wanted to feature lots of that peach colour!

I love the larger swatches of fabric incorporating more negative space into the composition. The colours are a gorgeous combination and I adore how the triangle shape takes center stage in this modern quilt block.

The stretchiness inherent in triangle quilt blocks can be fun or a challenge depending on the look you’re going for. When it comes to improv, I love embracing the stretchiness those larger bias edges offer. It’s a great way of incorporating an organic feel to your improv quilts.

What did you discover while working on your triangle quilt blocks this week?
