Shoo Fly Block | June Modern Sewcialites BOM

Shoo Fly Block #modernsewcialitesBOM | Shannon Fraser Designs | Blueberry Park by Karen Lewis Textiles for Robert Kaufman #blockofthemonth #easyquiltpattern

Squeezing in under the wire to share my latest block of the month for the #modernsewcialitesBOM sew-a-long!

With summer finally here and vacation in full swing, I was pleased to see that the Shoo Fly block for Modern Sewcialites June BOM was a quick and fun one!
I didn’t have much time to spend at the machine between day trips and summer activities, so to have this one come together lickety split was awesome.
Plus, I had some leftover blocks from a secret sewing project I worked on in May (and will get to share in November) so an already quick block came together even quicker 😊

Aside from being quick to piece, I love the versatility of this block. It’s got great visual impact and I can see it looking amazing as the featured block in a quilt. You can add lots of dimension just by switching up those half square triangle fabrics.
Sticking with the blues and corals I’ve been focusing on so far in this scrappy quilt, I opted to go with fabrics from one of my favourite designers Karen Lewis Textiles. Her Blueberry Park collections are just so spot on and I’ve loved the versatility, dimension and tactile feel they’ve added to my projects.

Here I’ve used a combination of Clothesline in Melon from Blueberry Park and Fog Plus and Storm Trees from her latest Blueberry Park 3 collection released this past May.

I really appreciate when different collections work so seamlessly together.

SOMETHING TO CONSIDER

This month, the focus is all about how you relax while being
creative.
There are lots of activities during the quilting journey
that I find relaxing and restorative, but I would have to say that hand binding
is at the top of that list! As soon as I sit down with a freshly quilted quilt
laid out on top of me ready with my thimble, thread and needle there is an instant
feeling of relaxation. My body relaxes, and I take a deep breath and prepare to
settle in for the methodical rhythm that you get into while hand binding.
The very act reminds me to slow down and just enjoy the task
at hand. I often find myself reminiscing about the quilt journey and things I
may have learned or things I would like to try differently next time. This isn’t
done in a negative or disheartening way, but rather simple contemplation on how
I can improve my practice – no judgement, just learning.
What’s also great about finding relaxation with hand binding
is that it’s portable, which is super handy during the summer! I’ve lost count of
the number of times I’ve taken projects on the road. And I love that you can
still be social while making progress on your projects 😉

I’d love to know what you find to be relaxing about your creative
practice – share in the comments below.
