It’s that time, my friend! Time to sneak a little peeky peek in another creative’s sewing kit 😊
Joining me this week for the latest What’s In Your Sewing Bag is my quilty friend Jemima, from Tied with a Ribbon.
As with most of my quilt community, Jemima and I first ‘met’ on Instagram several years ago and have been cheering one another on ever since. I’ve loved seeing her creative journey evolve from quilter, quilt pattern designer, to author and more recently fabric designer.
We both have a true love for colour and I’m just trilled for you to get to meet my sweet friend.

INTRODUCTION
Introduction – tell us a little about yourself! How did you get started on your quilting journey?
I used to do a lot of craft with my Nana as a young girl – sewing, learning to crochet and bake. My mum also was always sewing clothes for my family, so it has always been a big part of my childhood.
When I was about 17, I started quilting. I used to read books and have my mum take me to get fabrics or raid her stash to make them. As I grew older, I started to take some lessons, learning all about quilting techniques, how to make different traditional blocks and how to machine quilt.
With my professional background as a Secondary Home Economics teacher I have been quilting and sewing for over 20 years.
I love hearing how personal your quilting journey has been, Jemima. I have fond memories watching my grandmother knit and my mum sew, so I can just imagine how special it must be to associate creating with not only your Nana but your mum too. Bet you were one fun Home Ec teacher 😊
SEWING BAG
What kind of sewing bag do you have? (e.g. did you make it? Buy it?)
This is my very treasured Mini Sew Together Bag that was made for me by @misspipilotta in 2015 for a Birthday Swap Group that I was part of. It features the amazing Elizabeth print from *Tula Pink and it has always carried my hand sewing and bits and pieces ever since I received it.
What a truly lovely gift to receive! I also know how much you enjoy working with Tula Pink’s designs, so extra, extra special to have the Elizabeth print featured front and center! I truly love the *Sew Together Bag – it just looks so pretty and practical.
ALL-STAR ESSENTIALS
What are your all-star essentials? Your tried and true must haves that you can never run out of?
My must have are *Aurifil Thread for Binding, *Clover Black and Gold Applique Sharps (size 9) for Binding, *Tulip Embroidery Needles (size 8) for Hand Quilting, Cohana Scissors, Thread Gloss, *Glue Basting Pen and refills, *Clover Clips, *Leather Thimble pads and Needle minder.
I love a maker with a very specific list of all-star essentials – ha! I’ve never tried the Clover Black and Gold Applique Sharps – I’m intrigued! I gifted my hubz a pair of Cohan Scissors since he’s obsessed with anything mini – never thought to actually use them myself!
FAVOURITE ITEM
What is your favourite item in your kit? Why?
Aside from the Sew Together bag itself would be the sweet Needle Minder that was made for me by a friend many years ago.
Gifted notions, especially ones that are handmade, truly are the best. Plus, I find they bring a special moment every time you reach for them during the quilt journey 😊
SURPRISE ITEM
What’s one thing we’d be surprised to find in your bag?
Name tags – collected from workshops I have done and love having in there for no other reason than they are pretty.
Ha! Yes, I would never have expected to find name tags in your sewing kit! But these definitely warrant being saved and viewed on the regular!
QUILT KITS WILL TRAVEL
When do you find yourself using your kit the most? (Travelling, on the sofa, attending sew-ins?)
Definitely for binding, when I am hand quilting and travelling – it has all the things I can’t live without.
A well stocked sewing kit will definitely see you through all those quilty moments!
TRAVEL MEMORY
What’s your favourite travel memory with your sewing bag?
I love taking it away on Sewing Retreats – they are always with friends.
I’ve heard such wonderful things about sewing retreats and I hope to participate in one soon. Hopefully we’ll get back to travelling once COVID is over.
