For the last week of stitching improv blocks, we’ve upped the challenge even more! This time you’re leaning even more into that biased edge and stitching curves for modern improv play with curves!
Don’t let the curve intimidate you, there’s so much fun to be had with this curvy shape. Let’s see how my improv play turned out!
The shape of the week: curves
Don’t fear the curve!
There’s something glorious about working with curvy blocks in your improv. First, they add a wonderful organic feel to your composition. You can add lots of fluidity and connection using curves. Make them as large or as small as you like.
There’s lots to explore with the simple curve shape.
Day 1
I wanted to show you that curves can be super easy, even improv ones!
Whether you’re going freehand or using a ruler, the key it to start with the basic shape to get a feel for how you piece a curve.
The great news is, you can add as much wonk as you want to your curves – no precision piecing needed here!
Day 2
I played with a few shapes in this block. This is where the fun comes in when you start combining different shapes and ideas in one improv block.
Here I played with stripes, slicing ‘n dicing, building in curves, and an abstract L-shape 😊
How many shapes can you sneak into your composition?
Day 3
Rainbow time!
I wanted to show you that stacking your quarter circles will challenge you to experiment with piecing curves of different angles.
The smaller the angle, the more challenging it is.
See how that changes things for you.
Day 4
It was all about trimmings today and wanting to see what opportunities the humps leftover from previous blocks’ quarter-circle piecing. What composition could I create with these remnants?
This is what emerged.
Stay open to seeing the possibilities in your scrap pile.
Day 5
It was about keeping it minimal and elegant today, while also using up my trimmings.
Don’t feel like you need to build maximum detail into your block compositions. Try varying the complexity to see how that changes the way they play together.
