The inspiration behind Fraser Fir
Orphan quilt blocks
You might recall I originally shared the Fraser Fir design with you last Fall as part of the Little Forest BOM.
While preparing that design, I tested quite a few different variations to get it just right, which left me with some orphan blocks 😊. Rather than letting them languish in my works-in-progress pile, I figured I’d put them to good use in one of my go-to quick sewing projects: the pillow!
Cushions for the win!
Cushions are such an easy way to feature your leftover quilt blocks.
- They don’t require a ton of material.
- They’re perfect for practicing your quilting skills on.
- They make a great gift.
- They add a one-of-a-kind feel to your (or a friend’s) home 😊
See, lots of great reasons to stitch up your own quilted pillow.
Today, I thought I’d tempt you with this holiday-inspired, but not screaming in your face it’s Christmas with the Fraser Fir Quilted Pillow.
Pillow details
The fabrics
I went super classic with the fabric pairings on this cushion and featured a bright lush green for the tree canopy and a warm taupey brown for the trunk. It’s set against a white background to keep it fresh and winter-esque.
The trim
For some reason, I’ve been wanting to play with pompoms for the last couple of years and finally took the plunge!
It took me forever to find the right pompom trim and when I found this small black version, I thought it was not only cute but added a nice grounding pop to the pillow. I mean how can you go wrong with classic black?! You can’t – ha! At least not in my opinion 😊
The quilting
To keep the focus on the tree, I opted to machine quilt around the perimeter of the tree in 50wt Aurifil Thread and then anchored it by stitching along the outline of the branches to give them emphasis.
The back of the cushion is machine quilted in 1” straight line quilting for a classically understated look.
The pillow closure
I finished it off with a metal zipper for an elegant and durable touch.
If sewing with metal zippers intimidates you (like it did me for years) then check out this handy tutorial on how to insert metal zippers in your pillows.
