Allow me to introduce you to Mouse Trap Quilt Abstract Version 3 the blue coral one! The best part? This is your quilt as much as it is mine!
Let me explain!
But first, if this is the first you’re hearing about the Mouse Trap BOM, then let me catch you up. In a nutshell, the Mouse Trap quilt is designed as a modern skill builder to challenge your piecing and encourage you to think outside the quilty box. There’s a big focus on composition play, which explains why there are 7 different layouts included in the pattern to inspire your play. There’s also a ‘design your own’ with mini quilt graphics to help you fully play with your Mouse Trap design!
I’ve already introduced you to Abstract Version 1 (the cover quilt) and Abstract Version 2 (the coral one), and today I wanted to walk you through the fun to be had with Abstract Version 3.
Let’s dive in!

Mouse Trap Quilt the Blue Coral Colourway
Let me set the stage for you, I’d already made Abstract Versions 1, 2 and 4 (more to come on that one soon 😉), so I knew I still needed to make Abstract Version 3. Since I knew the layout, my focus wasn’t on the composition, my focus was on trying to show you the colourplay to be had with your Mouse Trap quilts.
Just switching up your fabrics and colour values can have a significant impact on the look and feel of your quilt. Your colours also help you highlight and focus on certain elements within the Mouse Trap quilt blocks.
For example, you’ll notice how the curves are more impactful when shown in the coral vs the dark blue. The eye is instantly drawn to those vibrant coral bits! That’s the power of your colour selection! You can find more information on basic colour theory in this post.
You’ll also find a few more examples in the Mouse Trap Newsletter.
How this is your quilt too!
I mentioned at the start of this post that this quilt is as much mine as it is yours, and here’s what I mean by that. Several months ago, I shared a poll on my Instagram stories asking you which was your favourite colourway.
There were four options to choose from and here’s what you voted for:
And this is how each of those looked mocked-up in those colourways. Amazing how different each looks, right?
Had the decision been left up to me, I would have made the green, pink and red one. But I loved the idea of involving you in the process and seeing what resonated the most.
Mouse Trap Abstract Version 3 Composition
Now that you know how the colourway came to be, let me walk you through the composition of Abstract Version 3.
This one is fun as you get to make at least one of each of the Mouse Trap quilt blocks, and there are also a few blocks that repeat. These repetitions allow you to create larger compound shapes, as shown in the full rainbow formation at the top center of the quilt.
You don’t need to have them connected to still create a sense of balance and connection within your layout. A great example of this is the placement of the Half Moon blocks in both versions 1 and 2. You’ll notice Half Moons V2 is placed at opposite corners of the quilt composition. The colours are also flipped to encourage a flow to the design.
Did you spot the ‘mistake’?!
Somehow, while I was piecing my rows together, I managed to flip my Half Moons block Version 1 upside down.
Bleurgh.
And I only noticed it once I’d added the borders.
Double bleurgh!
This is where I always like to remind myself (and you 😉) that this is your quilt. You get to decide on the placement of your blocks, and so I left it as a reminder that I’m the boss of my quilts – ha!
And you’re the boss of your quilts, too!
Quilting
This one is still hanging out on my design wall (learn how to make your own here) as I mull my quilty options.
But I’m leaning towards machine quilting in a somewhat denser design. I’m going with a solid backing, and it seems like an opportune time to show off a cool quilting motif.
Ideas are a brewing!

Mouse Trap Block of the Month
The Mouse Trap Block of the Month Quilt Along kicks off on January 15, 2025. A new quilt block pattern will be released on the 15th of every month until all 12 blocks have been released along with the final quilt instructions on December 15, 2025. Each new block introduces a new quilting technique or a new approach on how to use the quilting technique. The real fun is deciding what layout you’d like to make.
