How this quilt came to be
This project wasn’t on my radar at all. I was in the process of piecing up my Pink Lemonade quilt when I realized that I had a bunch of layer cake squares left over, and I was a little stumped as to what I was going to do with them.
I just so happened to be participating in the Curves Jubilee bundle featuring the Lunar Eclipse Quilt and I got curious about whether I could make it work with a layer cake.
The short answer is – yes!
So, I decided to make it happen 😊
And I’m so happy I did because this maximalist cutie brings me so much joy every time, I spot her.

Quilting
With so much going on on the fabric side of things, I decided to keep the quilting minimal and streamlined. My go-to for situations like this is straight-line quilting. I opted for 1-inch lines so that there’s enough texture and dimension without it being too fussy or dense.
The 40wt yellow thread adds another layer of texture, while the colour blends quite beautifully with all the hues featured in the Sugar Cone prints.

Binding
Deciding on the binding took me a minute – ha!
If you’re a newsletter subscriber (sign up here for weekly quilty fun!), you may have even voted on what binding direction I should go in. Ultimately, here’s what it came down to:
- I was tempted to feature the cherry print originally meant for the Pink Lemonade quilt I was making in the same collection. It’s a good thing I didn’t choose this one, as I would’ve been short on fabric.
- My next go-to was to feature a pinky purply Speckled print, which would have coordinated beautifully and kept the focus on the prints. However, I had a yard on hand and it seemed wrong to cut into it for just the binding (i.e. a full yard is easier to work into a future project than a half a yard). So, even though I pulled the print out of my fabric cabinet and even started pressing it, the urge to keep the yard intact won out. Have you found yourself in a similar struggle?!
- That left me with my failsafe black and white binding. Interestingly, you were divided on how the b+w stripe would look. Several of you felt it would detract from the quilt, others felt it would frame it. I tend to agree with the latter camp 😉. It definitely leans toward the maximalist look with all of those prints (it really is prints, on prints, on prints), but it works!
As soon as I started stitching the binding on, I knew that I’d made the right decision.

There’s something about the graphic nature of the black and white stripe that helps keep the focus on the colourful prints. It’s a weird thing that happens and I can’t entirely explain it, but it makes my quilty heart happy.

The black and white binding is perfect for this funfetti-colored quilt!
Thanks, Tiff! I love how you put that ‘funfetti-colored’ – what a happy way to describe this quilt!!
I have a brand-new baby girl granddaughter, (preemie) and I absolutely LOVE this quilt. I’m an expert garment sewer, not a quilter. Is a kit available for exactly the quilt you made? Would you consider putting a kit together for it? I am so excited to think of making this for her. Your consideration of my request is greatly appreciated!
Congratulations on your new baby granddaughter, Sharon! Exciting times when the family grows 🙂 I don’t have a quilt kit ready to go, but I’ve added a link to an Etsy shop that carries the Sugar Cone layer cake and I added in a little Speckled yardage to balance things out. With your garment making experience, I’m sure you’ll have no problems pulling together your quarter circle quilt blocks! Have fun with this one!
