Story Behind the Arrow Quilt Block
Surprisingly, Arrow was the 17th design in my geometric drawing series, and by that point, I’d only featured triangles in 5 of my designs. I would have thought it would be more, as the angles triangles create are super captivating.
But what I noticed the most about this design was the directionality it offered. This is something that caught my attention and intrigued me from a composition standpoint.

Composition Play
The Arrow block brings in a flying geese unit to your composition play. There are also those fun small ‘broken arrow’ bits that entice the eye to get up close and see what that detail’s all about 😊
There’re a few ways you can use the Arrow block in your composition play:
- Consider placing them at opposite corners of your quilt.
- Center a series of 4 of them, one in each variation, and build out from there.
- Use them as reflected ‘bookends’ as shown in Abstract Layout 4.
The triangle point allows you to help direct the flow, so step back and see the possibilities this lil’ cutie gives you!
Quilting Technique Featured
The Arrow Block brings in a few techniques, including small piecing, along with using quilt templates to help you keep those angles nice and sharp.
You’ve tackled similar techniques in the Triangle Points and Mosaic blocks, so refer back to those quilting adventures to help guide you through piecing your Arrow block.

Top Tips
Since the bias edge of the triangle point is quite long, that gives ample opportunity for things to stretch out on you.
Popping pins at several intervals along that long seam will go a long way in helping your pieces stay lined up.

Caution
Be extra mindful when pressing your Piece E. That’s a key area where things like to get wonky. Good thing there’s a wee bit of wiggle room to help trim down if needed 😉
