Mouse Trap Block of the Month Quilt Along 2024 by Shannon Fraser Designs - The tenth quilt block to be released is the Intercept block. This modern quilt block will have you testing out your sharp angle piecing! Read my top tips for quilting success on the blog. #MouseTrapBOM #quilting #quiltalong #angles

And just like that, you’re down to the last 2 quilt blocks in the Mouse Trap Block of the Month Quilt Along. This month, you’ll be stitching up the Intercept quilt block!

A big congrats on completing your Split Moons quilt block! Itty bitty piecing and curves in one?! But you did it! I’m super proud of all the hard work you’ve been putting in, just look at all you’ve already learned in the Mouse Trap BOM:

  • How to piece quarter circles in the Rainbow block.
  • How to trim up those adorable half-rectangle triangles in the Triangle Points block
  • How to work with templates and piecing angles in the Sticks block.
  • Traditional piecing in the Mosaic block.
  • Learning how to line up triangle pieces with the Apex block.
  • How to piece half-circles with the Half Moons Blocks.
  • How to keep things nice and straight with the Flag block
  • Keeping long angles nice and sharp in the Arrow block.
  • How to keep small strips nice and straight in the Split Moon block

Once again, this month will feel quite breezy compared to last month, but I’m still sneaking in a little bit of a challenge. Find out how below 😉.

Today I’m covering:

  • The story behind the Intercept quilt block
  • Composition play to be had
  • Quilting technique featured
  • Materials required
  • Top Tips

Story Behind the Intercept Quilt Block

I shared early on that the Mouse Trap quilt block designs stem from my morning art drawing sessions. The more geometric shapes I drew, the more I started to compound my shapes. It’s always so fascinating to see how your ideas evolve, particularly when you do a deep dive on a topic.

And I was very excited about the composition possibilities the Intercept quilt block offered!

Quilt with confidence! The Intercept block’s included template ensures crisp angles and flawless accuracy every time. Level up your quilting with the Mouse Trap BOM Skill Builder quilt by Shannon Fraser Designs

Composition Play

The Intercept block combines two of my loves: intersecting lines and angles.

It’s basic shapes that come together to create interesting line formations. And it’s those formations that allow you to incorporate some lovely movement. As I type this, I get images of placing them on their sides and offsetting them to create a spinning effect!

Don’t forget to use your mini quilt block graphics to play around with your composition.

  • Lay them in the same direction,
  • Flip them around,
  • Back them up against one another
  • Stagger them

What do you see?!

Quilting Technique Featured

What’s fun about the Intercept block is that the piecing pulls from the improv technique of slicing. One of the scary things about improv is slicing in your quilt block. This piecing adventure will give you a hint of how that feels! The good news is, the quilt pattern gives you specific parameters on where to slice, so you’re not slicing blind 😉

Love geometric quilts? The Intercept block is a bold, angular beauty—perfect for traditional piecing fans. Shown here is Mouse Trap Quilt Abstract Version 3 in blues and coral by Shannon Fraser Designs #modernquiltpattern

Top Tips

The best tip for the Intercept quilt block is to stitch with a very accurate seam allowance.

Take your time and don’t rush yourself.

That’s the main challenge with this block – stitching accurately and keeping things nice and in line!

Achieve quilting precision with the Intercept block—traditional piecing made easy with a smart template. and Block labels to help you stay organized as you work on your block of the month quilt! #seworganized

Caution

Just like with the Arrow block, you’ve got a very long bias edge to stitch, and this time you have less wiggle room for a little extra challenge 😉

If you’re making the reversed version of the Intercept block, make sure you’ve double-checked the placement of your pieces and the angle of your cut before you slice into your Base.
