I was recently on the road teaching several quilting workshops, and one of the questions that kept popping up was, “How often should I change my sewing machine needle?”

I remember asking myself this very question when I first started quilting!

You don’t want to change it too early, but since the condition of your needle has a direct impact on the quality of your stitches (and can be one of the reasons you’re experiencing tension issues), it’s a good practice to know when to change this essential quilting tool.

After years of quilting, and since I go through spurts where I’m quilting 8 hours a day and others where I’m only quilting a few hours a week, basing my needle changes on time wasn’t a good barometer for me to use.

You might find yourself in a similar situation!

How Often Do I Change My Sewing Machine Needle?

To keep things super simple and easy to track, I now have a rule that I change my sewing machine needle every 3 bobbin changes.

Why?

Because it’s easy to monitor!

It’s also not project-specific. Some of my quilty friends change their needles after each project, but I sometimes find myself working on several projects simultaneously, which complicates things for me.

And since I already need to keep an eye on my bobbin, it’s an easy reminder to give my sewing machine a little TLC ๐Ÿ˜‰

Now, this isn’t a hard-and-fast rule that you need to follow. Different machines, bobbin sizes, and sewing habits can affect how frequently your needle needs replacing. It’s simply the system I’ve found works best for me!

My Easy 3-Bobbin Rule for Changing Sewing Machine Needles
Keeping track of when to replace your sewing machine needle doesn't have to be complicated! After years of quilting, I've settled on a simple 3-bobbin system that helps me stay on top of needle changes and sewing machine cleaning. Signs It’s Time to Change Your Sewing Machine Needle

Of course, I don’t always wait for those 3 bobbin changes!

If I start noticing skipped stitches, thread breaking or shredding, or unusual popping sounds while stitching, my needle is one of the first things I check.

A bent, damaged, or dull needle can cause all sorts of stitching headaches, and sometimes simply switching to a fresh needle is all it takes to get things running smoothly again.

It’s such a small thing, but it can make a big difference to your quilting experience!

My Sewing Machine Maintenance Routine

I also use my 3-bobbin rule as a reminder to clean my sewing machine.

So, every 3 bobbin changes, I switch my needle and give my machine a good clean (and oil it according to my machine’s maintenance instructions).

I then add a note to my free Project Planner so that I don’t forget and can easily track when my last switch-out was.

Essentially, I have two things reminding me when it’s time for a little sewing machine maintenance!

You can read more about my Sunday Studio Maintenance habits, which is the routine I follow whenever I need to clean my machine.

It’s a super easy practice to follow and helps ensure my sewing machine (and iron ๐Ÿ˜‰) are working at peak performance!

Just be sure to check your sewing machine manual for the cleaning and oiling instructions specific to your machine.

What Type of Sewing Machine Needle Do I Use for Quilting?

As for the type of needle I use, well, I’ve simplified things on that front, too โ€“ ha!

I used to piece with a 75/11 needle and quilt with a 90/14, but I found it a pain to stock both needle sizes.

So, I decided to give an 80/12 universal sewing machine needle a go and loved the results!

I’ve pieced and quilted with lots of different thread weights, including 50wt, 40wt, 28wt, and even 12wt, to great effect.

Of course, your thread, fabric, and machine may call for a different needle size or type, particularly when working with thicker threads. But for my everyday quilting, the 80/12 universal has become my go-to!

I loved it so much that I decided to stock a box of 100.

I picked it up back in 2019, and it’s still going strong!

I’m always looking for ways to streamline my notions and what I stock in the studio, and my sewing machine needles are no exception ๐Ÿ˜‰

Keep Track of Your Quilting Projects and Sewing Machine Maintenance

If you haven’t already, you can download my free Project Planner, which is what I use to track the quilting projects I have on the go, when I last cleaned my machine, changed my sewing machine needle, and even changed my rotary cutter blade.

(‘Cause that’s another tool you want to keep nice and sharp for the best cutting results, not to mention that a sharp blade is generally safer to use than a dull one ๐Ÿ˜‰)

It’s a simple little habit that helps keep my quilting tools in tip-top shape so I can focus on the fun part โ€“ creating!
