Are you pillow obsessed?
I say obsessed, because it seems once you’re on the pillow lover list, you’re normally ‘fully on’ that list. As in, can’t help but want new pillows on the regular!
I get it.
Pillows are a quick and easy way to bring new life into a room.
Couch looking a little hum-drum?
Toss a colourful pillow on there and instantly your hum-drum sofa is now a ‘oh, what’s that pretty fabric on the cozy inviting sofa?’ Proceeds to sit on sofa to get a close-up of said pillow 😉
Yup, throw pillows are kinda magical in that way.
And the Etched Diamond quilted pillow adds to that magic with all her pretty faceted sides.

Just like a diamond has nice clean edges showing off her brilliance, the Etched Diamond design is meant to show off your favourite colours in a bold geometric design that balances clean traditional lines with modern bold colours.
That can be the exact reaction you elicit by featuring your very own Etched Diamond pillows on your own sofa (or bed, favourite reading chair, kids’ bedroom, etc.).
And the best part?
The patchwork is super dramatic, but couldn’t be easier to piece thanks to the easy to follow step-by-step graphics. You’ll always know exactly what the block should look like at each stage of piecing. Easy peasy!
Now, you may be thinking “um, Shannon, the pillows are pretty, but what about the zipper????”
Great news!
The pattern includes instructions on inserting a zipper and one of my testers even said
I really like your instructions for putting the zipper in the pillow. It makes it really easy.

If that’s not enough, I have a full tutorial you can refer to.
See, easy peasy!

ETCHED DIAMOND PILLOW FABRIC PLAY – LINEN LAVENDER
This lovely lilac linen hasn’t been in my stash for that long, but I’ve been super eager to feature her.
The colour is difficult to pick up on the camera, but it’s this subtle pale lilac shade that makes me think of a bridesmaids dress I wore to my best friend’s wedding. It’s classically sweet and lovely.
Combine those colour elements with the yumminess that is *Essex Yarn Dyed linen and it’s a tactile lovers ultimate combo!
IF that wasn’t amazing enough, I then added these glorious pops of Ruby and Bee solids. These solids feel amazing and have a gorgeous colour saturation. I loved working with them in my Shattered Star quilt. They didn’t disappoint here either!
I then upped the texture with some 1” machine quilted straight lines in 28wt Aurifil Thread that matched the Essex linen perfectly. Love when that happens!
For the backing I had planned on featuring the lilac linen for a nice clean look, but then I was looking at my trimmings and I couldn’t resist stitching up an improv backing. This one used up every last bit of fabric trimmings from making the front pillow, so if you want to make good use of your fabric, consider stitching up an improv pillow backing! It’s not only a great way to incorporate sustainable quilting into your practice, but it also means you have two looks in one!

ETCHED DIAMOND PILLOW FABRIC PLAY –DENIM BLUES
When I was designing the Etched Diamond pillow pattern, I had this blue version in my minds eye. I pulled out my AGF Pure Solids colour card and set to finding the exact blues that I wanted in my quilted lumbar pillow.
That fabric pull featured:
- *Ocean Waves
- *Fresh Water
- Crystalline
- *Cozumel Blue
- Night Sea
Sometimes quilty plans don’t always go to plan! And I needed to pull fabrics from my stash to have a cover shot for you!
This is where I love encouraging you to keep a fun fabric stash. It doesn’t need to be big, but you should stock it with fabrics you love. That’s how I stock mine and it’s usually a treat to sit in front of my cabinet and pull fabrics for a project.
Even though I knew I had the blues on the way, I was still super drawn to making a blue Etched Diamond pillow. So, I pulled the blues that called to me from my own stash and was smitten when I found:
- *Heart of the Ocean
- *Denim Blue
- *Crystalline
- *Maldives
- Denim

I raved about the floor cushion I made featuring the AGF Denim then and I can’t help but rave about the denim again featured here. She feels so soft and silky! It’s a glorious combination.
Not only do the blues play beautifully off one another, but it’s always fun to stitch with different substrates.
Here I mixed in some AGF Pure Solids and denim and I can’t get over the effect. It would look ah-mazing as a quilt!
The depth of colour on this pairing is pretty intense and has a regal and sophisticated effect. If you’re looking to add a masculine flair to your décor this combo would do the trick beautifully.
To add even more texture and detail, I opted for straight line quilting following the diamond lines of the Etched Diamond design using a 40wt Aurifil Thread. The colour matches the denim perfectly so the eye stays on the gorgeous combo of blues.

ETCHED DIAMOND PILLOW KITS
For my fellow neutral lovers, Lisa over at Sew Curated has pulled together two of the most calming warm fabric kits for you to choose from.
Here’s Caramel Latte and Vanilla Bean Frappuccino.
Combining different textures and fabric substrates is a great way for you to keep adding play to your creative journey. Go with linen or denim or consider combining both (you can see that at play in the Cloud Surfing quilt)!

Marry your love of stitching with your love to surround yourself with beautiful texture and fabrics by piecing up a set of your own. The pattern includes instructions for both the square and lumbar style so you don’t have to choose between the two 😉
Grab your Etched Diamond pillow pattern and add sparkle to your home in less than an afternoon!
