Check your mail! The summer issue of the Canadian Quilter Magazine is currently landing in mailboxes across Canada and internationally 😉. I’m excited to share that I have a pattern featured in there! If you need a fun summer project to show off at your next BBQ, then hopefully the Cake Stand Table Runner pattern comes in handy!

Cake Stand Table Runner Pattern
Inspiration
I was approached by a client to design a pattern that featured charm squares. This is not a typical fabric cut that I work with. I was excited to see what I could dream up! The collection the pattern was originally intended for was very sweet and whimsical, and I wanted a design that was equally cute and fun.
Sometimes projects fall through, and this cute design sat in my design folder untouched for months until I was chatting with the team at Canadian Quilter and they were on the hunt for a pattern for their summer issue.
I couldn’t think of a more perfect pattern for the summertime festivities!

Design Elements
The design features Cake Stands that are perfect for showing off your favourite fabric prints with some quilty options to add more versatility for you!
Scrappy & Pre-cut Friendly
Go scrappy with some patchwork featured as the background and then needle turn appliqué your Cake Stands in place.
You can also opt to use charm packs or layer cakes to make things even quicker!
Yardage
Or go more subtle with some yardage as the background which puts the focus front and center on the prints you feature in your Cake Stands.

Techniques used
You have options here too!
The pattern calls for needle turn appliqué (NTA) to attach your Cake Stands. This creates a lovely seamless look and is actually really relaxing to tackle.
However, I know NTA isn’t everyone’s cup of tea (it took me a minute to love it until I started doing this!), so you can make it even quicker to piece by going with raw edge appliqué instead of needle turn. It will still be just as cute 😊 All you need to do is drop the seam allowance included in the templates and you’re all set!
Difficulty level
The patchwork background is super simple to piece together. The challenge is mainly focused on the needle turn appliqué of the Cake Stand Base, Dome, and Topper.
But you can skip the hand stitching and go with raw edge appliqué which makes this quilt pattern super easy peasy.
Size options
There’s only one option included for the quilted table runner, but you can easily make more blocks if you need a longer version.

Behind-the-Scenes Story
There was a little email confusion when I was coordinating with the team at Canadian Quilter Magazine, so this project got squeeeeezed into my schedule to make it work for the summer issue – ha! But I’m so happy that I didn’t let a thing like time stop me from bringing this one to life.
If you’re a newsletter subscriber (sign up here to join the quilty fun!), then you might recall back in February how I kept mentioning I was working on secret sewing. That was this project 😉
