There’s something magical about the crisp geometry of winter — the way snowflakes spin and settle into perfect symmetry. That spark of inspiration is exactly what led to the creation of the Spinning Snowflakes quilt pattern — a modern, eye-catching design that combines playful movement with bold, graphic appeal.
This pattern brings together two of our favorite building blocks — half-rectangle triangles and snowballed corners — to create a quilt that feels dynamic, balanced, and totally mesmerizing. Whether you’re a seasoned quilter or looking to try something new, Spinning Snowflakes offers the kind of versatility that makes it a go-to for all seasons, not just snowy ones.
With multiple layout options, fat quarter friendliness, and instructions for everything from baby quilts to queen-sized beauties (plus two table runners!), this pattern is ready to meet you wherever your creativity takes you. Let’s take a closer look at what makes Spinning Snowflakes so special.

Inspiration Behind the Spinning Snowflakes Quilt Pattern
I always find it fun to know what sparked the inspiration behind a quilt design, so I thought I’d share a little bit about what I was thinking about when I designed the Spinning Snowflakes Quilt Pattern.
The main source of inspiration was winter. It’s my favourite season, which I know shocks a lot of people. Most find the cold darkness of winter to be a tough one to navigate. I get it, the lack of light is definitely a challenge. But when it snows and the ground and trees are blanketed in a fresh snowfall, there’s something super magical about this season that I find peaceful and beyond calming.
Since I knew this pattern would be released right before the holiday season, I instantly thought about snowflakes and the beauty they represent.
They’re also super intricate, and it got me doing a deep dive on angles to see if I could replicate some of that intricacy in quilt block format.
There were quite a few different layouts that I wavered between, but it was when I pulled the cover quilt composition layout together that I really fell in love with the design and solidified the base block design.
Pattern Overview
What’s fascinating about the Spinning Snowflakes Quilt Pattern is that it’s really based on one block layout. In fact, all 4 quilt layouts included in the pattern are based on that simple base block design.
The magic comes into play by reversing and rotating the layout so that you’re able to achieve depth, dimension, and movement within your quilt layout. AKA, quilty play at its best!

What’s Included in the Spinning Snowflakes Quilt Pattern
To help you achieve quilty success, the Spinning Snowflakes Quilt Pattern includes the following features:
- Fabric cutting diagrams for each quilt size
- Detailed step-by-step graphics
- Block labels to help you stay organized as you sew
- Pressing instructions to help your seams nest and points line up.
- Colouring pages for each quilt layout with fabric swatches to help you design your own colourway
- Quilt layout never changes, just the size of the block pieces, so the quilt looks the same no matter what size you make.
- Includes instructions for 2 table runner sizes and 4 quilt sizes, including: baby, lap, double, and queen.
- Track your progress tick boxes to stay on track.
- 8 additional colourways to get your colour ideas flowing.

Quilt Layout Options
To add versatility and quilty options for you, the Spinning Snowflake Quilt Pattern includes several layout options.
Cover Quilt
The main quilt layout and the one featured on the pattern cover focus on strategic block layout and placement to achieve a striking and geometric-centric layout. The half-rectangle triangles come together to create a secondary curvaceous pattern, helping to soften the linearity of the main design.
What’s fun is that the base layout never changes, but the block size does. So, whether you’re making a baby quilt or a queen-size size, the same number of blocks are required, and the same layout will be achieved.

Alternate Layout 1
This layout was the first one that I designed (even before the cover quilt 😉) and is based on a traditional block construction. Once again, it’s the secondary pattern the HRT creates in the background that elevates the quilt composition and adds interest and quilty play opportunities.
There are a few colourways included in the pattern to help get your ideas flowing!

Alternate Layout 2
This quilt composition is also based on block 1 but arranged in a new way to create an entirely new layout. This one reminds me of swirling snowstorms and peppermint candies – ha!

Fabric Flexibility
The main quilt layout is designed with solids in mind, but don’t let that stop you from sneaking in some of your favourite fabric prints! Adding a stripe, dot, or small floral to the mix is sure to add eye-catching details and enhance the geometric feel of the quilt.
The Larger the Quilt, the Bolder the Print
The larger the quilt size you make, the larger the pieces will be that you’re working with. This is a great opportunity to feature a bold print.
If you prefer working with pre-cuts, then the Fat-Quarter Friendly option for Alternate Layouts 1 and 2 will be a handy reference.
Fat Quarter Friendly Option
Both Alternate Layout 1 and 2 are fat quarter-friendly. The pattern includes the option of going fully scrappy for the background or featuring yardage for a more unified and cohesive look. The yardage also helps enhance the secondary layout that the HRT create.
You can see the latter in full effect in the Artisan Cotton version I made here.

Who this Pattern is Great For
The Spinning Snowflake Quilt Pattern is great for confident beginners and experienced quilters alike. The main challenge is piecing together the half-rectangle triangles. They take a minute to wrap your head around how to place them and then trim them.
The pattern includes detailed instructions and graphics to help you visualize how these cuties are pieced. There’s also the 2-at-a-Time Half-Rectangle Triangle Tutorial that’s there for added help.

Thrilled to hear you like this one, Esther! I love the swirls, too 😉
Hi Shannon, I think your spinning snowflake pattern is really beautiful – the colors are reminiscent of the approaching holiday season but appreciate the versatility of the pattern demonstrated in non holiday colors. The geometric symmetry of the blocks is very soothing and love how the blocks can be rearrange to create different patterns.
Thank you so much for your kind words, Marisa! I always love seeing how different a quilt looks just by switching up your colourway!
Congratulations on the versatile design and pattern release!
Thank you so much, Yvonne! Feels good to finally share this one!
I love how the Snowflake Pattern looks like organized improv. Snowflakes are each individual, and this design gives me that impression. I want to expand this area of my quilting knowledge; your pattern takes me in that direction. Besides winter is my favorite season, another way to celebrate and advertise my passion!
I love hearing that winter is your favourite season, Anne – it’s mine, too!
I live in Alberta and your pattern makes me think of looking out the window on a sunny winter day to see the snow sparkling on the mountains.Your patterns are always easy to follow and this would be beautiful in white/blue/gray. Congratulations on your new pattern release
Oh, it would look GORGEOUS in white/blue/gray, Leslie! I hope you make that happen 🙂
Great use of colors in this pattern. The placement of the pieces is interesting and I like the versatility of being able to have multiple layouts. This pattern is a great design for solid fabrics and would most likely look great in prints too.
Thank you for this opportunity to win your exciting new quilt pattern
Happy to hear you like the colourways, Kristin! I do have a thing for solids, but prints would add some lovely drama 😉
I love the various layouts to chose from. Pretty color choices.
Quilty choices are always a good thing 😉
I love the bold colors and shapes you choose. The snowflake theme really helps us transition into the Christmas season!
I was going for Christmassy without being committed to Christmas – ha! I like flexibility in my designs, but sometimes you just want a holiday quilt, right?!
What a stunning design! The colors, the bold lines, and HRT’s. I recently purchased a specialty ruler specifically for these and am looking forward to trying it out. Keeping fingers crossed! I love many of your designs and have made several since retiring a few years ago. Let it snow, let it snow!
I’m so with you, Casie – let it snow, indeed! And now I’m curious about this HRT ruler you refer to, I’ll have to check it out!

Awesome – thank you!
Congratulations, Casie! You’re the lucky winner of the Spinning Snowflakes quilt pattern! I’ll send you an email with the details!
That’s awesome and has made my day. I’ve never won anything, possibly because I very rarely enter contests, nor buy lottery tickets. Perhaps I need to reconsider…. Looking forward to pulling fabrics from my stash and getting started. Many, many thanks.
Oh, your note made my day, Casie! Happy to bring you a little joy!
I adore alternate layout 1 mostly because they truly spin, but because I have too many fat quarters that need this pattern!
The fat quarter version is so beyond fun, Marion! Grab your favourite bundle and you’re all set!
I love the options and the uniqueness of this quilt!
Love hearing that, Erica! Always fun to have different layouts to choose from to suit your mood/quilty needs!
I love your new pattern. I like the spinning version.
Gotta love a quilt with movement, right?!
I absolutely love the 2 alternate layouts of this pattern- I definitely think of swirling snow storms and peppermint candies. The colors are joyful and eye catching.
Well now I want some peppermint candies – ha!
I love alternate design #2! It looks like those peppermint candies
That’s such a fun layout! And I love that it makes you think of peppermint candies – yum!
I love the alternate layouts. This is a very fun quilt. I can see it in lots of color combinations.
The color play is so fun with this one, Susan! I have a folder full of different ones I mocked-up – I couldn’t stop – ha!
Hi Shannon! I love your 2 alternate patterns as I’m more of a traditional quilter. To me, those patterns reflect that style more. It would be so much fun to pull different colors from my stash to see how they all come together to create something beautiful, especially with the secondary designs that your pattern has in it!
Isn’t it fun when you can take a quilt pattern in either a modern or traditional direction?! Have fun pulling all the fun colors from your stash!
