Thank you so much for joining me and Love Patchwork and Quilting Magazine for this modern skill builder. Your response has been truly heartwarming!
I’m just thrilled that you’re excited to expand your quilting repertoire and up your quilty skillz!
Last month was all about leveraging the cool features of needle turn appliqué to create a seamless design featuring the Little Forest quilt block. I love that you dove right into the challenge and didn’t shy away from hand-sewing the tree canopies 😉
The next block in the Little Forest BOM is Twin Peaks. This modern quilt block gives you lots of chances to play with fabric all while learning how to piece half-rectangle triangles!

INSPIRATION BEHIND THE TWIN PEAKS QUILT BLOCK
Quebec, the province I live in, has a plethora of coniferous trees.
What’s so lovely about these trees is they remain green in the winter. In case you live somewhere sunny and warm 365 days of the year, then you might not know that winter can be cold, dreary, dark and grey. Seeing the evergreen trees covered in snow is such a beautiful sight to behold amongst that dreariness. Especially when the sun is shining and gleams off those snowy treetops, those are winter view goals – ha!
Naturally, I took inspiration from the different types of conifer trees and decided, for this one, to go a little abstract by designing it spilt down the middle with two colourful sides.
The two-colour play is intended to give you some fabric fun! Dive into your stash or work with the colours you pulled to add a pop to your quilt block.
When it came time to name this little cutie, I instantly thought of Twin Peaks, which instantly made me think of the crime/ drama show Twin Peaks starring Kyle MacLachlan from back in the early 90s. No drama was involved with the quilt block, but the name seemed fitting!
QUILT TECHNIQUE FEATURED IN THE TWIN PEAKS QUILT BLOCK
When I announced the Little Forest Block of the Month Quilt, I mentioned that the quilt is designed with quilt techniques of varying intensity. This was done purposely so that you never felt too challenged that you couldn’t make it, but still challenging enough to keep you engaged.
This month, you’re going to focus on traditional piecing featuring half rectangle triangles. They’re the fun cousin to the half square triangle and create a more elongated triangle block that leads to lots of movement and dimension in your quilts.
If you’ve made HSTs before, then this is going to be super easy for you. If you haven’t, no worries, the pattern walks you through piecing the modern quilt block step-by-step.
TIPS FOR QUILTY SUCCESS
The best tip is to keep an eye on aligning your triangle points 😉 How you align your block for piecing will have a direct impact on your outcome. Take your time and double-check your alignment before you stitch!
Since you’re working with bias edges, you want to avoid unpicking these blocks as much as possible. Each time you do, you’ll distort your block further making it more challenging for you to keep things aligned.
Follow the steps in the pattern and you’ll be rocking this quilt block!
